exhcnage prolly has more people and stuff going on then the village just the village is 1 block along what is basicaly a highway to the south end of the city most of the day so it has an aperiance of more going on. as for the death of the village its rent that kills the buisnes as they cant affordit when the city goes o ur buildings with this much now pay more taxs plz

Osborne is a great urban neighbourhood and will continue to be, but I'd say it's reached its post-hip stage of life now.

Yeah that's exactly it, the village still has far more residents plus amenities like a grocery store that make it more livable. It's not a "destination" anymore, while the exchange is growing into that role and attracting more businesses, which is great. I just get sick of people shitting on Osborne because it's not where the cool kids go to party anymore, even though it's still a perfectly healthy urban neighbourhood.

^ Osborne conveys an impression of being on the ropes partly because the City has effectively frozen the Osborne streetscape in time. Just about every other similar urban neighbourhood in Canada has undergone revolutionary change in the last 20 years, but Osborne looks the same as it did in Y2K, maybe even worse with the sorry state of the OVI.

Imagine if there was even the slightest bit of development that had taken place... imagine a new 10-ish storey residential building on each corner of Osborne and Stradbrook with commercial at the base. Imagine similar new buildings where the Gas Station Theatre and Circle K are. Imagine a new hotel on the site of the OVI bringing in people to spend money on food and entertainment every night. Imagine newer, larger commercial buildings between Stradbrook and Confusion Corner basically extending the heart of the village south.

This would not be some kind of unprecedented level of development... it would just be moving the development already taking place on the residential side streets to Osborne itself, but it would change the feel of the area entirely.

Instead we have the same old dowdy buildings just sitting there, as the businesses move out and rent goes up.

^^^It's still there, just smaller ($7 mil). Theatre expansion and renovation now...no residential portion.

^ Almost better if nothing happens and they wait for the NDP to get back into office. Whether you love or hate the NDP, the Gas Station Theatre's best chances of getting some provincial help for redevelopment would come under their watch.

i know the theatre component complicates the whole project, but i wish the U of W's little development arm that's getting so much right presently could have reached across the river and saved this development. student-oriented housing in OV seems like a slam dunk to me for both major universities.

Does anyone know if the city's public works dept. is still taking a 9'-13' strip of frontage of the Market Lands site on both William and Princess (ie, widening the right of way by 9')? I would imagine this kind of enormous take would have an impact on the site design.
