For me, beautiful bridges are rarely the large bridges, they fit in the spectacular catagory. But beauty is often more subtle and doesn't need size.
These are some of the most beautiful bridges I can think of. None are giant, and these are in no particular order.
Paris has some of the most beautiful urban bridges of any city in the world, and I could just list off almost all the bridges in this city here. But I will try to limit them.

I understand what you mean, some of the smaller bridges are quite nice. Here's the George Mc Arther Bridge aka Bell Isle Bridge in Detroit. It's kind of long, but not quite as long as most of the bridges posted on here, and it's low. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lkalmat/
It's impressive, and though it fell entirely into disuse in the 80s, in the early 90s it was retrofitted to carry the city's light rail line across the Mississippi, and a new bridge deck was later added to carry automobile and pedestrian traffic.
I just love the way that the substructure looks so intricate and yet so muscular and industrial at the same time. Beautiful in the same way as the Eiffel Tower. Extra points for being old (1874) and so useful in spite of its age.

Centennial Bridge (1940) between Davenport and Rock Island.
I cross this one every day.
Formerly called The Memorial Bridge, this twin-span suspension
between Moline and Bettendorf is now just called the I-74 bridge.
One span was completed in 1936 the other not until 1959.
Being that both spans are way too narrow for an interstate bridge, plans are in the making for its replacement (around 2015)
I love this one because it's so famous but most could probably not name it. There's nothing overtly grand about it, but it's still awesome. The setting also helps a lot.

I've seen those climbing tours on television and I honestly don't think my heart could take it.

yes i have , but way before the climbs were legal , our climbs were at night also which was something you cant do anymore
