Austin did not really get "played" (to the fullest extent). They actually called Amazon's bluff - by not offering incentives. They were not stupid enough to "pay" for HQ2. But, they (and everyone else) provided them with valuable intel on their cities.

Amazon already has a significant presence in Austin. Furthermore, Northern Virginia (DC), NYC (and the State of NY) and Nashville (and the State of Tenn) wooed Amazon with billions in incentive dollars. Dallas, Austin and the State of Texas were not going to play that game.

Amazon knew where it was going all along. This whole thing was a charade. Amazon received intel on over 230 cities across the U.S. and Canada - worth billions; for free - by bidding HQ2 out to the masses.

Everyone got played to some extent!

But.....
Outta of the 20 FINALISTS that Amazon named in this CHARADE, 17 cities were LOSERS of the HQ2.

And Austin was one of them, a so called "front runner city"
Just a shame, is all I say,,,,

San Antonio on the other hand, did the RIGHT thing in stepping back and NOT taking the bait!

Significant Amazon presence?

Nashville, Long Island, and Crystal City now have MORE Amazon presence.

Those are just the facts.......

It was a LOSS for Austin,

But Austin, you just move on.....

It looks like Sculley won't be around to kick anymore. She has announced her retirement, and hopes to be out by summer.

What a travesty that vote was. $300,000 to run a city? Good luck finding ANY top talent that'll want that job now. SA will just be a stepping stone now for City Managers. Sculley did incredible things for SA. Good on her for stepping down, I wouldn't want to stick around either.

I think the cap is actually 250K. A good chunk of change to be sure, but is it comparable to other major cities???

The people of this city deserve what ever comes to them.

That was an extremely shortsighted vote by the locals.

Yeah, they got this voted in by telling voters it was going to be lower taxes. Instead of actually giving a real reason, they didn't like Sheryl Scully and wanted to mess her over.

She was a fantastic City Manager and we are going to severely miss her.

They did lie about it lower taxes, but this vote didn’t mess with Sculley. Her pay nor tenure would have been affected. It was to begin with the next city manager.

Not all all. That is way too much of a “the Sky is falling” reaction. There are ways to work around the salary issue, it’s the term limit that might be an issue.

100%. Maybe they should just go ahead and term limit all city employees eh? I've known a few down in the 'trenches' so to speak that should be term limited.

Sculley will be missed. She did some amazing things for Phoenix prior to San Antonio poaching her from AZ. It was the best move San Antonio ever did. She will be missed.

According to the news, it's about 270k, so I guess we are both wrong.

I just read an article from today stating $312,000. So, who really knows to be honest. But from what I’m hearing from people I know who work at city hall, the number is definitely 300k at minimum right now.

To be honest, I don't think we'll really know until an offer is made, or the position is filled.

I agree the term limits provision will have more of an adverse effect than the salary.

I’m usually on your side but the average voter did really mess up this time.

I never implied the voters got it wrong. I’m simply stating it’s jot the chicken little scenario people want to make it out to be. Is it ideal? No. But I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as some are thinking.

I'm back!
And I totally agree with you, sirkingwilliam. It is not as bad as it seems, but any little negative thing one can throw at our BEAUTIFUL and UNIQUE and HISTORICAL city , they will completely blow out of proportion. Everything will be fine, and San Antonio will continue to be the worldly, unique, and historical city that people from all over the world fall in love with once they have visited our fair city.

Oh, I just hope I haven't expressed my opinion and FACTS TOO MUCH! I don't want to get BOOTED OUT AGAIN!
