One of the things I really love about Birmingham is that there are so many large historic properties that can be, and are being, restored. Shiny buildings are nice, but I'd rather is towers like this reinvent the skyline.

I think this is huge for that intersection. I'm excited that they're starting this month!

Look at all these stunning pre-WWII highrises in Birmingham! It truly fits in with the best architecture cities on the Northeast. You guys down there have some incredible assets and it's great to see the investment dollars stepping up to these renovations. Birmingham will be a destination city and you guys are on the right track. Excellent!

They will not be using the original front wall of the old Piggly Wiggly/5 Points Music Hall. They pulled it down Friday. I did not think that wall would have held up the top 6 floors of the hotel, if that was the plan.

Thanks Austinlee! It's nice to see these buildings being reused instead of wrecked. There are more of them in downtown, too! So many old, empty buildings....

In other news... and I'm really excited about this

The the Birmingham Biz Journal is reporting that the BJCTA plans to bring BRT to Birmingham. They're considering initial lines that would connect the airport to Uptown, then to the new, under-construction, intermodal facility. Also, a line that would extend from downtown to the Crossplex area. Officials say they would examine ridership following the "aftermath" of the World Games to determine if replacing the BRT footprint with rail is warranted.

Powell School developer awarded $3.7 million HUD loan

The multi-million dollar project that will convert the historic Powell School building into apartments got a huge boost this week.

The U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development awarded the City of Birmingham a $3.7 million federal loan this week to aid in the redevelopment of the city's oldest school building, located at the corner of 24th Street North and Sixth Avenue.

The building was constructed in 1888 and closed in 2001.

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell announced the award will be given to the developer, Integral Group, which will use the money to acquire and convert the building into 24 studio one-and-two-bedroom units.

.....................

Aside from the HUD loan, the project was among the first recipients of Alabama's state historic tax credits in 2013.

.....................

The property survived a 2011 fire, which severely damaged the building.
In previous reports, the project was said to cost between $3.5 million and $4.5 million to complete.

I drove around the Parkside area, and WOW, things are really building up. Much taller than I thought things would be (even if things are only around 3 to 5 floors).

Everything is looking great, and the Southside seems to be a chaos of construction!

Also, some good activity on our old bones highrises!

Another note, as of July 15th, I'll officially be a citizen of the City of Birmingham! Looking forward to moving into the city

Basically Huffman. On Gadsden Hwy wedged between a ridge and I-59. 15 - 20 min from downtown. Just east of the Roebuck exit.

My only problem is with the street level parking. There is only access at "main entrances". Less street activity and more baking cement with fewer feet stomping on it...

How can that get approved with the ground level like that? Does Birmingham not have zoning that prohibits a street frontage that poorly designed and uninviting?

It's something more akin to a college town, like Tuscaloosa or Auburn, but I don't understand how this development conforms to local ordinances.

Maybe one of our more seasoned Birminghamians can provide some insight?

Seriously, though, look at it! It's DEAD at street level.

Ugggggghhhhhhhhhhh

maybe it hasn't been approved?

this is just a preliminary rendering... not sure that it's gone before the Design Review Committee yet.

The only thing I've heard is rumors of law-suits from other parties in the area that don't want to see it built.

Considering the presence that Harbert has in the community, I would be VERY surprised if this tower didn't get built.
