To me, re-developing a parking lot somewhere around Graham/St. Mary would make far more sense (but still a tower - towers just make sense in a downtown).

I DO like the idea of re-constructing the Upper Ft. Garry gate over Broadway though, and having cars drive through it. Entirely impractical, but boy would it look cool!
Fully agree with ya Freeweed. A site like DowntownBooster's would be ideal for a high-rise tower.

Looking at it from another perspective, we've all walked countless times from the Forks docks to Scotiabank Stage, but how many of us think to walk to check out the Upper Fort Garry gate. Just about everyone I've asked thinks it's too far when in reality the 100 Main St. lot is the same distance from the Docks as the stage is, and even closer than the foot of Esplanade Riel.

Point being, a well designed mixed-use development on 100 Main has the opportunity to bridge the historical, cultural, beautification, & economical aspects withing the whole Forks/Fort Garry (hotel & gate)/Union Station neighborhood.

Time to Step up

How has the new tallest turned into a remake of the old fort ( which looks good by the way ) Seems like entirely different proposals for these piece of property that don't have anything in common with each other.
Again, I'm calling out the brave soul who dared to mention a late December 2006 announcement to step up.

Can you believe that this thread about nothing has actually logged 8,000+ views? Incredible.

Hey 2.0 in the Canada section can only dream of this kind of success.

I agree that a tower (mixed-use) may be better at a different location than at the 100 Main area but if it came down to having it built there or not at all, I would rather see it built there.

If the tower could be built somewhere else downtown, I think one of the best locations would be the northwest corner of Fort & Graham.
You're probably too young to remember, but that is the old Dominion Motors site. It used to be a car dealership there, till they moved and became Keystone Ford in 1986.

What is it?

A whole Thread so far about nothing....Is it a fort?......Is it a new tallest?.....Or is it nothing at all.............I think I'll check back in a few hundred postings, hopefully there will be something to actually read on this big announcement.

Yes, anyone who can't hum "Get Your Ford at Dominion" is somewhat suspect as a Winnipegger.

So the City's been poking the 3 development proposals for more information (including financing) ... responses from the developers are due by Feb 6th. Hopefully we will hear shortly thereafter an announcement of the winner.

I don't want to lose the history, but I will amdit, that a think the true loaction of the Fort is a poor location for any sort of park. Yes, it is "just across the street from the Forks" but not accessible at mass very easily.

I think anyone of the 3 proposals detailed would be fantastic, so it's not as though I will be disappointed whichever direction the city chooses to go. Of course, I think we should just do all 3, the two towers would just have to choose new locales.

Oops, sorry, back to reality.

@jeff: Thunder Bay rebuilt Fort William on a flood plain, and every year we pay 40 million to renovate the fucker. If we're lucky Winnipeg lends us that ice breaking machine thing. The original location is now a rail yard beside a slum.

So...

Does anyone know what happened to the Feb. 6th deadline for financing details? Are any of these proposals actually going to happen?
