I know how everyone here loves parking garages, so I thought I'd share this small project.

Bowie HS is getting a 3 story garage with tennis courts on the roof. I believe it'll be just the 2nd garage on a HS campus in Texas (other is Highland Park).

That's ideal. Bowie has a massive amount of parking around it. Acres of parking lots. Every once in a while I'll ride my bike over to Bowie, and then cut through the parking lot. There's an entrance behind the school that leads into the Veloway bike track. It's a bit of a ride from my house since I live just 1,500 feet from Crockett HS, but I enjoy the challenge. Once I'm there, I do several laps around the 3 mile track, then head home. In all, it's probably a 20+ mile ride.

Yea it's a big school with a large student body. Actually is not a bad idea especially having tennis courts on top.

There's a reason they have to put the courts up there. They need to expand the campus, but are now under new impervious cover restrictions. That's why they bought the surrounding lots, but can't expand the existing impervious footprint.

Athletics is getting a new 2-story building and gym. It's the building on the far right in that last pic. It's going on top of the old tennis courts and parking lot. But first they're addressing parking and courts to relocate the tennis teams.

Pretty interesting to watch the plans come together.

It's funny what new and improved environmental regulations will do to create better planning. Crockett High School on the other hand, when it was built 1968, they filled in some caves on the property.

I hadn't heard that. That sucks. I know Bowie is on top of a cave as well. It was filled in with debris during construction. But sometime in the late 00s, a teacher and some students excavated it. There were some stories done at the time, I think. It's not some big, beautiful cave, but cool nonetheless.

Yeah, they're mostly just entry points for the aquifer. My dad and uncles were big into caving back in the 60s and 70s. They even discovered some new rooms at Inner Space.

This is a bit off topic, but the article on page 3 of this PDF was written by my uncle Wolfgang, about his experience along with my dad, Andy, my uncle Thomas, and my aunt Linda and a few of their friends at Inner Space.

In September, 1969, Roy Brooks, Roger Reed, and Wolfgang Lehnhardt dug through into a small room from this upper level. From there, a passage led to a large room with many formations and numerous leads. Several sodastraw columns over 6 feet long were found, The next trip was made by Wolfgang Lehnhardt, Thomas Lehnhardt, and Brian Peterson who discovered the pit leading to the First and Second Helictite Rooms, On several other trips, crawlways totaling 3.00 to 400 feet of passage were discovered, On December 20, 1969, Mike Bradley, Wolfgang, Linda, and Andy Lehnhardt made a trip to check leads from previous trips. After being in the cave several hours and getting ready to leave, Mike Bradley dug into a small room 7 feet high, 30 feet long, and 15 feet wide, The.re were three leads out of this room; one crawlway to the right, another crawlway to the left, and a 4 foot chimney which led into a large room. At the entrance to this room is a pit about 30 feet deep. Beyond, on large breakdown with inu.ch flowstone and many sodastraws, several leads were . fo11nd, The most obvio1,1s was followed for about 600 feet with several pits 15 to 20 feet deep in the center of the .passage. Much box-work was encountered throughout this section. At the end of this, a passage from 10 to 30 feet high and 6 to 20 feet wide leads to a room with extensive breakdown, Passages lead to the right and left from this room. The left hand tunnel becomes a crawlway and the r.ight hand tunnel narrows to a stoopway on flow sto~e and contains many sodastraws.

That garage is amazing! The tennis courts are a really smart idea and I love how this will help preserve some land around the school.

That is a really creative solution to expansion needs and the regulations, as Kevin said. And, let's be honest - covered parking for all those students is pretty sweet in August/September especially. That's something I never had at my high school, that's for sure. I just baked until the AC finally cooled down.

HEB is prepared to move their store at the Y if construction hinders customers from accessing the store. They'd move to 290 & FM 1826 where they own 31 acres.

Houston has three high schools with parking garages.

HSPVA (Downtown, all underground)
Saint Thomas (completed in 2011)
Lamar HS (u/c)

Never heard of those first two. Maybe the factoid was 2nd public HS in Texas. But looks like Lamar will beat them to it, so Bowie will be the 3rd.

The Hobby building may be up for sale. It's 1.75 acre block with no CVCs.

It's about time. My cousin and her husband work there. I told her last year that I predict it'll be sold and torn down soon. She didn't believe me. Something about the State wouldn't sell it.

Their facilities commissioner just said in that article they would welcome unloading it. It's on like Donkey Kong.

Hopefully they sell the parking garage two blocks to the west of it as well. It has the chill water plant on the SE corner of it but something creative can be done for sure.

Yes, please.

BTW, what is on the block west of the Federal Courthouse? Is there anything keeping it from being developed? A CVC runs across the SE corner of that block.

I'm envisioning so many huge towers surrounding Republic Square.
