The frats moved around a lot back then-- Sigma Chi appears to have been at 2719 Ellendale ca 1921...gone now.

A little noir (presumably the "P" in "Phi" is a misprint):

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that. I think it was a decorative pond rather than a swimming pool, but I could be wrong.

Tarrytown Theater (aka 'Palace of Pictures') 800 seats

Address: 313 Walk of a Thousand Lights (The Pike), Long Beach Cal.

1907

http://www.cla.csulb.edu/departments...ach/tarrytown/

The Tarrytown was an open-air theater. (mid-day performance shown below)

http://www.cla.csulb.edu/departments...ach/tarrytown/

It appears no one knows where (exactly) it was located. [hence the question marks the Long Beach Historical Society placed on this pc]

I posted the following as part of a reply to a post by Noircitydame. NCD posted a 1950 advert for Citizens Bank (sadly now missing due to the Photobucket debacle) which contained thumbnail pictures of their branches.

"Originally a branch office of the First Citizens Savings Bank and Trust, the architecturally historic landmark that now houses Fais Do Do was constructed in 1930 at the height of the Art Deco period in Los Angeles. As Los Angeles spread west, eastern industrialists, silent filmmakers, and other early hipsters took over the tiny Mid-City area which soon became known as the Sugar Hill District.

Later in the 60's, the bank was converted into a neighborhood bar and underground club frequented by such legendary musicians as Sam Cooke, Billy Preston, and John Coltrane."

So now we know!

Thanks Hoss. I thought it looked familiar.

"Our home on Westlake Ave. L.A."

ebay

seller's description: Vintage Photograph 1927-32 House 514 Westlake Ave. Los Angeles CA

I can't be sure if it's one of the houses shown above (they're certainly from the right time period),

but there's no definite match.

Comparing the 1921 Baist map with the views at Historic Aerials, I think that 514 N Westlake Avenue now lies roughly under the middle of the freeway.

Today's Julius Shulman subject is from two years before yesterday's Vitaminerals building. It's "Job 42: Sidney Eisenshtat, Capitol Brush Co., 1947". I've just picked a selection of the 20 images in the set.

This is just inside the entrance.

Through the opening, a selection of their products.

This office, complete with floral curtains, looks quite basic.

Here's the boardroom.

I'll finish with this view of the warehouse.

All from Getty Research Institute

The building is still standing at 1646 S Vermont Avenue, and just about recognizable, despite some really ugly modifications.

A handsome building gone bad.

I pretty much think it's criminal to paint brick (even if it is a paint company). And to paint it mustard yellow! [faints]

Sorry I'm late to the party, but if anyone is interested a few years ago the Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society published a great article on the SP operations on the West Side. Back issues are still available through their web site https://sphts.myshopify.com/collecti...line-issue-096

The Hotel Ramona was on the SW corner of 3rd and Spring, so I think this photo looks north on Spring from about 4th.

PhotoBucket made a decision to effectively eliminate all the limited free accounts. In the process they managed to say its all the customers fault because we're being scofflaws and bad people.

If you want to keep your so-called free account with any linking, you have to pay PB $400 per year or get lost.

[Note that they changed their website after they made that decision. Very sneaky.]
