Thousands of times every day, an enemy attacks the government’s computer networks, according to Robert Williams of 21st Century Technologies.

“The sophistication of those attacks is also increasing,” said Williams, vice president of product development for the defense contracting firm.

But a new military mission coming to San Antonio will battle cyber attacks. The U.S. Air Force announced plans to put its cyber command, the 24th Air Force, at Lackland AFB. Its mission will be to secure the military’s communications and data systems.

The cyber command will be a boon to San Antonio’s bustling defense contracting industry. It will bring an estimated 400 highly skilled jobs with annual salaries ranging between $70,000 and $75,000 to San Antonio, said Bill Mock, executive vice president of Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. But it also will generate additional jobs among the more than 80 private defense companies here that specialize in computer network security, cryptology and data analysis, he said.

Yet Medtronic gets the bells and whistles while something like this gets an article.

Contractors vie for plum work: Hacking for U.S.

Though not talking specifically about Texas, it could ring a similar scenario here.

Young talent flocks to companies that seek billions in new spending

By CHRISTOPHER DREW and JOHN MARKOFF
The New York Times

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The government’s urgent push into cyberwarfare has set off a rush among the biggest military companies for billions of dollars in new defense contracts.

The exotic nature of the work, coupled with the deep recession, is enabling the companies to attract top young talent that once would have gone to Silicon Valley. And the race to develop weapons that defend against, or initiate, computer attacks has given rise to thousands of “hacker soldiers” within the Pentagon who can blend the new capabilities into the nation’s war planning.

Nearly all of the largest military companies — including Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon — have major cyber contracts with the military and intelligence agencies. The companies have been moving quickly to lock up the relatively small number of experts with the training and creativity to block the attacks and design countermeasures. They have been buying smaller firms, financing academic research and running advertisements for “cyberninjas” at a time when other industries are shedding workers.

More Cyber Security related news(didn't want to start a new thread);
I was watching CNBC and it seems like they will be here in SA on the 10th to talk about the growth of Cyber Security here in SA.
Quoting Erin Burnett:
"We are headed to Texas and we are very excited to make a stand... at the Alamo. Among our special reports were gonna be focusing on Cyber Security, its one of the fastest growing industries in the country, the capital is in San Antonio...."

---------------------------------------------------
Confirmed it with Mayor Castro's State of the City speech:

"The day that the 24th Air Force was to be inaugurated, we put out a press release touting San Antonio's cyber assets, and I got on the phone with a reporter and we were fortunate enough that the New York Times saw fit to declare that San Antonio is becoming a leader in cyber security.
On February 10th CNBC will broadcast from San Antonio and profile San Antonio's business success and the cities of Texas, and we will continue to invest in raising the profile of our successes to other communities throughout this nation and the world.
I believe that we cannot even count over the years how many opportunities we've missed because people don't know about all the riches of this city and its potential. And with your work and the great accomplishments that this business community and our general community have made, selling San Antonio is not hard at all, and it's a pleasure to do that. "

and it also looks like GameLogic also jumped in as a sponser for the CCDC for this year.

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GameLogic, Inc., a provider of interactive marketing services for the U.S. regulated gaming industry, today announced that it is a proud sponsor of the Northeast regional qualifier for the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC). GameLogic joins the Department of Homeland Security, Boeing and Trustwave in supporting this prestigious, industry-recognized competition.

The National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC), started in 2004, is a nationally recognized cyber security competition and is the largest college-level cyber security competition in the world. Each participating college undergoes a rigorous three-day competition that includes professional penetration experts attempting to exploit their systems while the participant team works to achieve business objectives identified by their “company” executives. Knowing how to defend future employers against cyber attacks while balancing the needs of the business is a critical skill for college student bound for a cyber security career. Past sponsors of the CCDC include: Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture and AT&T.
