Most happening place in Kerala
A Case Study

‘Happening place’ is a term commonly abused by the real estate promoters. But how many of them reveal a real analysis based on facts.
What makes a region happening place? Existing infrastructure, number/size/importance of the new projects coming up makes one such a place.

Hi Sreekumar,
Most of the items gets coverage as news items in National media. But not in local media. Also there are no fullpage advertisement to sell the appartments, since they do not need it, because their needs are very much backed by the other developments.

One example link given below. This is in National media. But did you able to find the same in any of the local media. No surprises. May be they have not grown up to understand what is it.

General Atlantic To Invest $60 Mn In Kerala IT Firm
Wednesday 25th of July 2007 General Atlantic (GA), the Greenwich-headquartered global growth investor, will invest $60 million (Rs.2.42 billion) in Kerala-based IBS Software Services (IBS), a leading IT solutions provider to the travel, transportation and logistics industries.

GA, rated among the top 20 private equity investment companies in the world, will thus acquire a minority stake in IBS which is headquartered in Technopark here.
In a press statement Wednesday, IBS Group chairman and managing director V.K. Mathews said the firm was excited about this partnership, which would enable it to leverage the strengths of the respective organisations.

'Being a global growth investor in the technology sector, GA will be able to provide IBS with strategic assistance to propel IBS to the next phase of its aggressive growth strategy,' said Mathews.

'GA's investment will be used to further accelerate the organisation's growth through global mergers and acquisitions, and ramping up our sales, business consulting capability and infrastructure.'

Founded in 1997, IBS provides new-generation software products and services for the travel, transportation and logistics sectors.

It serves more than 70 customers worldwide including top airlines, busiest airports, cruise lines and oil and gas companies, which use IBS solutions for their mission-critical operations.

IBS employs about 1,700 people globally with two development centres in India.

GA managing director Abhay Havaldar will join the IBS' board of directors and will assist the company in evaluating growth opportunities globally.

Havaldar said IBS was one of the leading software product companies in India and with its deep technical expertise, high-quality client base and strong management team, it was extremely well-positioned for continued growth and expansion.

sathyalal, keep the good work.

Perhaps we can take pics of International Apparel Park & Film/Video Park and have a collage like you have done for Technopark. I can get permission since I worked earlier with KINFRA.

And can think of extending the scope of the 'Happening place', ie, not to stop at Akkulam, but continue till Vizhinjam. Infact it is one such straight stretch spanning some 40 kms from Vizhinjam to Technocity along the NH.

More foriegn nationals are making the city home. Their spending power is creating another boom in the city. Maldivian nationals are some of them

Some 4,000-odd Maldivian nationals call Thiruvananthapuram home. They have been arriving here in large numbers in order to seek medical help.

More than 70 per cent residing here are between 10 and 35 years of age. They come here to seek medical advice and find admissions in schools and professional colleges across the state. Our primary responsibility is to look after their welfare. We want to do so with the help of the state government. I occasionally meet the commissioner of police, otherwise, there is hardly any communication with government officials.”

Also, a lot of money is being spent on shopping

bad prospects of kerala media

It's really great to see all these things happening in trivandrum
{infosyscampus, iist,indian institute of scientific research,techno city,vizhinjam etc etc}
but there is one thing which makes me wonder ,why our media, esspecially printing media is giving little importance to all these things.
Am sure about one thing that if ane of these projects like IIST was going to be materilised in KOCHI .our media would have boasted about it.
according to me the media has put a cover over the developments of TRIVANDRUM

Very true Robin. The media experiences "selective amnesia" as far as Trivandrum NEWS is considered.

Technopark headquartered IBS gives IBM, Unisys a run for their money

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 1: IBS Software Services, a Kerala-headquartered IT company that began its operations about 10 years back, is now giving global software giants like IBM and Unisys a run for their money.

IBS, which began its operations here in September 1997, has become a leading global provider of new generation IT solutions to travel, transportation and logistics (TTL) industries of major airlines, airports, oil and gas companies, seaports, cruise lines and tour operators worldwide.

Its 70 high profile clients include leading airlines like Emirates, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, leading airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Dubai as well as oil giants such as Shell and British Petroleum.

The company's client base also includes cruise liners like Cunard (Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II), Royal Caribbean Cruise and Star Cruise and leading resorts like Vail Resorts, Inc. (VRI), the premier mountain resort operator in the US, Brendan Vacations and Orbitz.

Addressing reporters here Wednesday, V.K. Mathews, chairman of IBS, said the company was started with a staff of only 55.
"We began with a paid up capital of Rs.1.76 crore (Rs.17.6 million) and today it has touched more than Rs.800 crore (Rs.8 billion)," he said.
"During the one decade of its existence IBS has done three domain-based acquisitions of companies abroad," said Mathews.
Last week, General Atlantic, a leading global private equity firm, invested $60 million (Rs.2.42 billion) in IBS.
"This investment is the single largest private equity (PE) investment in Kerala and probably also the largest PE investment into an IT products company in the country," said Mathews.

After General Atlantic deal, IBS scouts for MRO buys
Economy Bureau
Posted online: Thursday , August 02, 2007 at 0035 hrs IST

Thiruvanananthapuram, Aug 1 After garnering India's biggest private equity (PE) investment in IT products, IBS is scouting for good buys in the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhauling) space. Two or three potential acquisiton candidates are in the shortlist.

IBS software, a Technopark-based products company in travel, transportation and logicals (TTL) verticals, has grown 700% in paid-up capital in a decade.

Not sated by $60 million preferential shares in investment from the Greenwich-based PE giant General Atlantic, IBS is also working on a roadmap for an IPO in 2009. "We're targeting to be valued at $1 billion by then," Mathews told reporters, here.

In the last five years, the company has made three domain-based takeovers, two in US and one in UK.
The company has ten overseas offices.

Thumbs up RGCB goes central

Great honour for India's best Bio-technology research centre

Quote:
The cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided "to place RGCB as an autonomous institute under the administrative control of the Department of Biotechnology", Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters in New Delhi.

Following the implementation of the decision "the RGCB will be the only central institute in the area of biotechnology in Kerala", said Dasmunsi.

"The takeover will have a major role in implementing relevant biotechnology projects in the state as well in the entire southern region."

The RGCB aims at researching about cancer, human genetics, protein engineering, molecular reproduction, molecular microbiology, and neurobiology and plant molecular biology.

The minister said the transfer would also help RCGB develop into "a national research centre for bio-drug discovery programmes based on the knowledge of traditional systems of medicines prevalent in Kerala".

It will also help the country "to utilise the institute's expertise in cell and molecular biology for developing diagnostic and prognostic markers for disease".

The move may also help "to provide adequate research and teaching facilities for human resource development in biotechnology"
