October Sees Traffic Up 12%

San Antonio Airport Traffic Continues Growth, Sees 12% More Passengers

Quote:
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — San Antonio International Airport continues to see record growth.

The airport saw 899,696 passengers travel through the airport in October, a 12 percent increase in volume year-over-year.
Quote:
The airport says it is on pace to reach 10 million passengers for the year. It surpassed 9 million passengers for the first time last year.

Just doing some quick calcs (bc work is quiet and I have to be here today), just adding November and December numbers from last year to the year-to-date number for this year brings the passenger total to 9,874,645.... I can't see San Antonio International NOT surpassing the 10mil mark this year at this point. Pretty damn exciting for SA!

Yep. If SAT averages 11% growth in both November and December, it will clear 10 million by about 50,000 passengers. Through September 2018, the Y-O-Y growth was 10.7%. That got a slight bump (closer to 11% for the year) with October's 12% growth.

The interesting piece of this is why is it all of a sudden that international passengers are up as well? SAT seemed to struggle forever in that. I'd also like to know how Air Canada is doing now that their schedule has changed to more connection friendly timing. Anyone able to pull those numbers?

I have to imagine with Spirit going into ABIA that SAT can't be too far behind. That would be a big 'get' for SAT imo and would continue to fuel growth. Its crazy to think where this airport was just 2 or 3 years ago, struggling to sell itself with the 20 - 30 destinations it had versus now with 54 destinations. At&t leaving I think really helped San Antonio realize that you have to invest in your airport if you want to attract and retain good jobs. SAT isn't there yet, but they are so so so much closer to where they need to be. Now if they can just get that elusive flight to Boston, and dare I say a trans-Atlantic... (I know, I know... longer runway blah blah blah).

Didn't Spirit fly here at one time? Anybody know why they pulled out?

Long time lurker, new to post. Thought I'd post stats of SAT for anyone curious.

This is a comparison of Quarter 1 (January, February, March) 2017 vs 2018 passengers stats of where people fly from SAT. These numbers are PDEW (Passengers Daily Each Way) to see which routes are growing/shrinking. Divide the number by 2, as its counts passengers flying DFW-SAT and SAT-DFW each day. These numbers are passengers final destinations, do not include connections ie if someone flies SAT-DFW-DCA, it does not count towards the passenger count of SAT-DFW, only SAT-DCA. To save time, I only compared airports with at least 100 PDEW to/from SAT

San Antonio International hits another record in November

San Antonio International hits another record in November

Quote:
Nearly 889,000 passengers passed through San Antonio International Airport in November, setting a new record for the month. The November 2018 tally is up 78,000 passengers over the same month a year ago.
Quote:
The year-to-date passenger total now stands at 9.2 million — an all-time record for the city through 11 months. That’s a more than 100,000 passengers over the total count for all of last year — with a busy month of holiday travel left to calculate.
December 2017 Traffic was 784,230.... Barring something weird happening, looks as though 10mil is imminent for 2018.

Did anyone else read through the sad excuse for a transportation plan from ConnectSA?

https://therivardreport.com/connects...ortation-plan/

Where is the vision? The budget calls for 20x money to be spent on highway expansion than transit. It comes no where close to realizing VIA's Vision 2040 plan, implementing only two of the corridors as BRT (one of which is 10+ years away and would likely not ever actually get funded). I get trying to get suburban sprawlers to vote for a plan but most cities have tried doing a 50/50 split between transit and auto spending. This is way too lopsided towards auto traffic and is encouraging additional sprawl.

Airlines do the same with passengers to a lesser extent. San Antonio is not a hub and it is in relatively close proximity to DFW and IAH, which are hubs. So there won't be many direct flights from SA to Europe in the near future. Sorry.
Availability of European airline gates; cargo and demand for business and first class seats are a big determining factor for establishing new service for transatlantic flights. When travlers from San Antonio heading to Europe fly to/from Houston or Dallas it helps the airlines to understand passenger demand from SAT. If the majority of people from a particular market fly coach instead of first class or business class then it would be hard for an airline to make a route viable even with market subsidies.

So the question is whether there is a large market for business and first class passengers heading to Europe from SAT?

What if passengers choose to save a little money by flying coach to Houston, then going first class on the long flight? That's kinda what I did on my visit to SA over the holidays with my flights from Boston... I flew sheep class on the short connector flights (SAT-IAH), then I got the extra "plus" legroom seat on the longer flight (IAH-BOS).

As a side note, as a result of my visit I was the 10 millionth passenger at SAT this year. There was no fanfare, but I was that 10 millionth traveller.

PUMPED for that extra lift to Seattle! Any day now, Delta.

Earlier this year, I used Interjet to Mexico City and enjoyed the service. Nothing spectacular but a great option to have when heading to Mexico. I would like to visit Guadalajara this coming year!

n Tuesday January 1st the Chief Air Service development officer tweeted this:

https://twitter.com/PratteInSAT/status/ ... 4857968647
"I do believe we’ll be starting off 2019 with some excellent news. Keep your eyes and ears open starting tomorrow. Maybe even next week too"

Yesterday AS announced increased service to SEA, however, does anyone have any speculation as to what might be announced next week?

I assume Frontier trying some different markets.

Trying to peer into the crystal ball... my guess is a new nonstop to a major domestic city that isn't currently served. Boston? Portland? But that's just trying to read between the lines of the tweet, I have no particular insight.
