The opposition to the pump house tower wants a grocery store, a bakery, restaurants and all the amenities that come with a viable neighbourhood yet at the same time they want to block additional developments that could make those things feasible. Thy also then complain about how a developer that choose to build condos with no on site parking is having a difficult time selling them since someone else did not build a parkade for them to use. I find it really hard to support their opposition for the reasons they are giving.

Should Winnipeg allow a 24-storey apartment tower on Waterfront Drive?

Freep has the Poll today..

Yes. We need high-density residential development downtown.
41% (1068 votes)

No. It will ruin the low-rise feel of Waterfront Drive.
41% (1059 votes)

Maybe. But developers must consult more with residents.
18% (464 votes)

Total Votes: 2591

Poll

Are the residence voting twice? Yeah I know, It's most likely IP logged votes.

@aldosantin: Wanda Koop says as a woman, she sees the Tower as "a major erection." 11:44 am on Jan 6

Is she serious? That is her appeal? It looks like a big penis?! Serious?! Credibility lost..

how mature "Wanda Koop says as a woman, she sees the Tower as "a major erection" if I as a male made a comment saying something looked like a women's private part, i'm convinced I would be shot by the firing squad. brutal, how unclassy of Ms Koop

I think it sounds like a great project for the area. Lots of residents, grocer, restaurant/cafe, and the almighty parkade that everyone wants. Sounds pretty good. And, AND, it saves the historic Pumphouse!

And rightly so, don't think the city is in a position to pick and choose especially in that district. If the proposed development now makes it viable to construct a parkade, all the power to it!

Ms. Koop or whatever she calls herself is a moron.

With this hurdle passed, is there a realistic shot of this happening or is it still a long shot?

Do you think she was referring to...

1.the act of erecting
2.the state of being erected
3.something erected, as a building or other structure.
4.physiology (the one you thought it was)

come on guys, I understand you don't agree with her but lets try and be reasonable.

Not sure if my sarcasm detectors are off today. But she says as a woman, it's a major erection. There's only one way to interpret that statement. If she was only concerned with the construction, she didn't need to say "as a woman". What does being a woman have to do with any of it?

It surprised me that this tower will be a rental building, not condos. Probably more viable that way.

I think this has something to do with the City's tax breaks for rentals, see: http://www.winnipeg.ca/CLKDMIS/ViewD...dd/2014/a13256

I'm not positive, but I believe the grant for rentals still has money available in the fund, but there is no longer money in the grant fund for condos.
