Lightbulb PHILADELPHIA | Drexel Dormitory 34th Street | HEIGHT | 17 FLOORS

Groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday for new dormitory at Drexel University, along 34th Street, designed by Erdy McHenry. Check out the rendering at www.intechconstruction.com, click on Current Projects, click on Pre-Construction. Caisson drilling start is imminent, scheduled Completion is late 2009.

Great piece of architecture....Floor plates are shaped like "footballs with the ends cut-off", and rotate as they go up the building..

Question

Great looking building! It has planned housing for only 282 people.... that doesn't seem like much. Is that common for college dorms? I would expect many more people to be housed in a 17 story building.

I'm sure Drexel has a lot more housing dorms, so this will just be another add on. Anyways, building looks interesting.

Thoroughbred...are you working on a cover-page type of post with the picture and stats? The building looks GREAT!

Its actually quite common to only house 272 students. They are not regular
dorm rooms but more like suites/apartment style with common areas, kitchens and bathrooms.

Thoroughbred, I agree with Don....you need to build a lead post with pics and info.

Also, this shouldn't be in the Construction forum*yet*, it is still a proposal until actual construction starts (ie: concrete is poured). Right now it is still in "Pre-Construction".

Project is now"officially" under construction as notification was awaiting the groundbreaking ceremony...caissons have started and should be completed in two weeks...concrete superstructure should begin rising in July, and will be a very visible part of the University City skyline by year end.

I will try to get the photo downloaded, however, here is a start of a cover page, keeping in mind that I am "technology challenged":

Drexel University-34th Street Dormitory
Owner: Drexel University
Location: 34th Street, just South of Powelton Avenue
Square Feet: 120,000 sf
Height: 17 Stories
Completion: Fall 2009
Architect: Erdy McHenry
Contractor: Intech Construction

Everything happening in west philly over the past 10 years has just be amazing. We are lucky that these school have decideed to really invest in the area.

Whether they had to or not, it is still great for the city.

seems like a lot of the West Philly stuff gets ignored. Yeh, this project is moving along smoothly and is already taking its football shape. Someone should really make a start page for it and take some pics.

About how tall do you think this building will be?

I'd guess around 210'-225'?

15 foot first floor, 12 for the rest totals out to 207. Dunno if those estimates make any sense at all, haha.

Wow, that rendering is sick-ASS!!! Not your average dorm building, that's for sure. Some lucky students will be living there in one more school year.

Nice shape, but something tells me the facade will end up not looking anywhere near as cool as it does in these renderings:

And the site. The tennis courts will be replaced by new ones going up behind the 7-11.
