Nice. SF and NYC are the only 2 cities that are in the top 5 of every one of these categories.

Must be something in the water.

Including fortuitous, weird scientific mishaps, if Marvel Comics are to be believed...

Some New Yorkers might be happy Tony Stark lopped off the top half of the Pan Am Building though.

More seriously, it may be useful to bring up some kind of definition of 'fractional count'.
Googling it straight takes you to this.

https://www.nature.com/articles/549S79a

The problem is that kind of stats is always controversial, because of the favored method to compute them.

And it's well known, researchers may be somehow educated and very specialized in their own fields, they are not particularly wiser or more honest than your average neighbors, so they always tend to favor and quote their very friends over the competition.
Everybody is a selfish and disgusting asshole. Lol, even the greatest scientists.

As a result, truth is not only a matter of raw science. It also depends on your honesty and how well-mannered you are.
In a nutshell, when you're no wimp, you're not scared of rivals. They may even eventually turn out to be friends of yours once you actually know them.

That being said, I won't complain too much about their ranking. My only concern is there's nothing much about my country/republic aside from super pop Paris.
Even Lyon is down in the ranking, while the obvious 2nd center of science and tech in France.

So they're saying that the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) is ahead of the entire Toronto metropolitan area with all of its universities, research institutions, and massive tech sector (many times larger than all of Michigan)? It doesn't seem plausible. Sounds like one of the tables that may have accurate data but with an extremely misleading header: 200 Top Science Cities.

How about 'Cities with the most Fractional Count', a rather dubious/questionable criteria in its own right.

I see no reason to discount this list. Ann Arbor is part of (wealthy and highly engineering focused) Detroit msa, it’s not some random liberal arts college

This doesn’t measure how many people are employed in some tech related field, but rather the source of new innovations

Also Australian and Canadian cities may be experiencing a crowding out effect related to the excessive allocation of capital to expensive real estate , and less to r&d

Interesting--it is very research university oriented so no surprise to see UC locations (Bay, Socal, Santa Barbara, Davis, Riverside etc), Ann Arbor, Boulder etc. represented. The UC system is arguably the greatest public university research system around.

It isn't really arguable. In terms of the volume and quality of research just Berkeley and UCLA would outperform most state and national public university systems.

Yeah, I don't think there's any question that the UC system is the world's premier public university system, esp. for research and hard sciences.
