Many of the sheets from early fire insurance atlases (1906 and 1917) are now found on the Library and Archives of Canada site.

I played baseball a few times on that turf...it was like playing on an asphalt parking lot....the ball would come to you in an instant.....the left fielder would field balls like a third baseman.

I always hated that turf (played football)....nasty rug burns. Best field I ever played on was in the old Velodrome across the street. For playoffs, whenever the stadium was booked we would play at the Velodrome. It was cool because the crown was so pronounced you could see the curve from the sidelines.

It really was little more than a carpet on top of a parking lot at that point.

I have a great interior photo of that Royal Bank branch, when it was brand new, in my office.

The cars have the 1976-83 licence plates. There is no Winnipeg Square yet, and from the clothes and cars I would guess this is April 1977.

If it is April 1977 me and my friends should be visible on the sidewalk coming and going between pinball arcades and record stores.

I have a vague memory of there being two Circus Circuses at the same time for a while: one on Portage and one on Main. I might be wrong about that though.

You guys may already be hip to this, but I just discovered the John Warkentin fonds at York University Archive. Page after page of jaw-dropping views. Something about the colours and quality of the film transported me. Posting a link to one photo of the north side of Market looking west from King Street. They're all good, really.

It's a fantastic resource/archive. I met John Warkentin once when I was working as a summer student at Ross House Museum in Point Douglas in the 1990s. He must have been close to retirement at that point. He was visiting Winnipeg and was wandering around the area with this camera. I imagine a lot had changed since the 50s and 60s when the Winnipeg photos in this collection were taken.

Anyone know when the first Tim Hortons opened in Winnipeg? As a kid I only remember Robins and Coffee Time but not Tim’s. Not sure if they were around but my parents never went there.
