Homeland Security allows S.A. airport to receive international private jets

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection has agreed to permanently designate San Antonio International Airport as an "Airport of First Landing" for private aircraft.

U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, made the announcement on Tuesday. He says the decision is contingent upon the Secretary of Homeland Security's final approval, which is expected later this week.

Prior to this designation, international private aircraft had to first touch down in an official customs entry airport before heading to San Antonio.

"This designation will significantly enhance business, commerce and trade relationships throughout Mexico," Smith says. "The City of San Antonio will benefit from this greatly."

The City of San Antonio filed an application with Customs and Border Protection in late December 2006 to designate the airport as a first landing airport for private aircraft.

San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger says Smith made telephone calls and sent letters to the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection to expedite the application.

"Millions of tourists and business travelers visit San Antonio every year traveling through San Antonio International Airport in private aircraft," Smith says. "With this airport designation status, tourism and economic development will grow expediently."
