there are many old schools in Montreal that have entrances with stonework signs stating "filles" and "garcons" (and a few in Anglo Montreal with their English genders).

The tavern has a total of four entry doors so it's very possible that some served that purpose back in the day. Alas, it's not etched in the stonework so I can't tell for sure.

Some info on Laurentide Beer/Ale: https://www.beeretseq.com/laurentide-lager-and-ale/

And a hilarious ad from 1989 (in French). Worth watching just for Jean-Paul (pornstache dude who says little, but drives a Laurentide K-car).

Another hilarious ad, this one is for O'Keefe (in French)

Taverne Alexandre in Sherbrooke was just featured on TVA Nouvelles during a report on "reopenings".

I wonder if that's a lio45 property?

I am not in lio’s shoes, but he gave enough hints in another thread so that I can say with confidence that Taverne Alexandre is not his property. I’ve visited both places “back in the days”, and Taverne Alexandre is also more “refined “ than his property. You won’t find pickled eggs and tongues there. You also won’t be able to order a “chienne” of Labatt 50 there (that said I am not sure you can do that at lio’s place either).

Anyone who knows Sherbrooke knows that the 3 Louis' restaurants + Taverne Alexandre (same owners) are not properties that are available to own, they belong to the family that owns that little home-grown chain.

Does anyone remember Mother's Restaurant?

It was a smallish chain that had the best pizza. There was one in London on Wharncliff & Riverside.

Yes I remember it. When I was very young my family used to go to the location in North Bay on our way to Southern Ontario. I remember eating pizza and spaghetti there.

I read that the chain tried a comeback in Southern Ontario within the last few years but didn't have much success and I think all of the locations have since closed.

Talking about bars, it seems so far that the pandemic has really accelerated the trend of their closures. And I'm talking about the ones that don't serve food. We used to have so many of them in my region. I drove around town the other day and noticed that only one bar was open. A couple of the other ones that have reopened after the lockdown have converted into pub restaurants with full meals being served and are advertising their food and not so much their beer and drink selections.

I totally forgot Taverne Alexandre was owned by the owners of Louis’. I recall commercials wherein they were always grouped together. I wouldn’t say Taverne Alexandre is upscale or anything, but it is definitely in a different league

Yes! My brother worked at the downtown Ouellette Ave. location here in Windsor. It was really good for back in the day.

Mother's was revived for a short time. I went to one in Brantford for pizza, about 4 years ago. Sort of like the old times, with the kitschy, old-fashioned decor/memorabilia. Decent enough pizza, though not nearly as good as I remembered it from the 70s.

Actually over the years I had restaurants in my buildings that were a lot nicer than Louis', it's not about being too chic, it's the fact that these buildings are in the hands of people who have long term plans and a very stable business, they're just not available to own.

(* not even kidding--for some five years, I had as a tenant one of the very highest end restaurants in the city. Mayor Bernard Sévigny was a regular there.)

The decline of bars has been happening for over 20 years FAR pre-dating COVID.

Part of this is due to changing demographics as there simply aren't near as many kids today than there were 30 or 40 years ago. This when backed up by apps for dating, lousy music, skyrocketing downtown real estate prices, and no body talking to one another as they are too busy chatting on their damn phones, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Gay bars in particular have taken a huge hit. When I was in London Ont in the mid-80s there were 6 gay bars and now there is just one and it's just holding on for dear life.

Or those damn millennials simply do things beside drink. How dare they change their social habits.

It wasn't the drinking but just the social aspect.

It's like coffee shops. Before IPhones one would go to a coffee shop or cafe and meet friends or just read the paper and start conversations with new people. Today it's just a zombie house that serves caffeine. Even people who 'meet' there do nothing but look down onto their phones.

IPhones truly allow one to communicate with everyone and talk to no one.

Bars started declining in the 90s, due to drink prices and less tolerance for drunk driving.

I'm old enough to remember when a regular person could afford to drink all night at the bar every weekend, and a lot of them drove home drunk.

When I started drinking back in the mid eighties, it was often in places that looked just like this:
