Space shuttle makes surprise stop in San Antonio

Neat. Cool story too. I had a feeling it would stop in San Antonio. I knew about the El Paso stop. It's only landed once before at Bergstrom here in Austin years ago back when it was still an air force base. Besides seeing the vapor trails of the orbiter in the upper atmosphere and seeing it in orbit, I've never seen it in person. These people were lucky, the last time a shuttle stopped in San Antonio was in 1996, and the shuttles are slated to be decommissioned sometime next year.

Space shuttle makes surprise stop in San Antonio[

When Sharon Mooney heard a television news flash about the space shuttle Atlantis landing at Lackland AFB on Tuesday morning, she scooped up her 7-year old daughter and dashed out the door.

She drove to the flight line near U.S. 90 West, joining a dozen vehicles winding along the curved two-lane road. Motorists peered through binoculars, cell phones and digital cameras to catch the shuttle piggybacked atop a modified Boeing 747 in the distance.

“This is an opportunity for her to see a part of our history,” said Mooney, 49, as her daughter, Brieonne Mooney-Bird, scooted across the hood of their car. “This is what America is about. We get to see what our taxes are paying for.”

There was a time when San Antonio was a regular pit stop for space shuttles. Kelly AFB served as a fueling station for Atlantis, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Endeavour and Enterprise and their transport planes from 1979 to 1996. Before Tuesday, Endeavour was the last shuttle to stop in San Antonio, on July 30, 1996.

Space shuttle Atlantis landed this morning at Lackland Air Force Base's Kelly Field. The 37th Training Wing here at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas, is the largest training wing in the Air Force. Kelly Field is the longest continually used runway in the Air Force (since 1917) and population wise is the largest Air Force base in the United States.

A NASA photographer caught this cool shot of Lackland AFB 2nd Lieutenant, Natassia Cherne taking a moment after the landing.

That thing must get pretty awful gas mileage to have to stop every 500 miles or so.

Heard about this on the news the other day. Too bad I missed it. Might be one of the last times a space shuttle makes a pit stop here. Did see it once a long time ago but I can't remember what year it was.
