Port Alberni

I saw this news article tonight on Check 6 and thought I'd share it on here. I haven't been to Port Alberni in such a long time but I always like this little city.

It's usually the hotspot of the island as well.
Hot sun plus water is always a winning formula.

2,800-home project proposed for Port Alberni
Carla Wilson / Times Colonist
AUGUST 27, 2021 06:00 AM

Quote:
The San Group of Companies has unveiled a plan for 2,800 new homes in a mix of housing types on 73 acres in Port Alberni. The site will have an estimated value of close to $1 billion once it is built out.

Pacific Mayfair Estates would provide much-needed accommodation in Port Alberni where, in the past four years, the Langley-based San Group has set up milling facilities and a value-added plant, and plans to use a deep-sea berth as a container port for shipping.
I would prefer to see development right in the heart of downtown Port Alberni rather than on the fringe. It has the wide streets along with many vacant and underutilized lots that are prime for dense redevelopment.

But I understand from the developer's perspective that getting an entire multi-acre billion dollar development rezoned and approved in one motion is much more attractive.
If I were mayor/dictator I would grant the rezoning contingent on the developer building a landmark low-to-midrise mixed use building on a derelict site right in the heart of Downtown.

Pretty amazing for Port Alberni. I was going to post this when I saw your post Holden. The city seems to be really growing.

This is the check 6 article and video.
