Thought it might be useful to label one of the images posted above to display some current projects in effect.

This area is getting a lot of attention lately (fortunately, as it needs it).

Manuel Perez Park

Manuel Perez Jr. was born in Oklahoma City in 1923.
He was awarded the Medal Of Honor for his bravery during fighting in the Phillipines in World War II.

source: https://images.findagrave.com/photos...1060786760.jpg

(I colorized the image above to make it more interesting -- see the link for the original photo)

Though his family moved to Chicago when he was a boy, and he grew up there, Oklahoma City still claims him.
He died in battle in 1945, at the age of 22.
He was laid to rest at Fairlawn Cemetery in OKC.

In 1979, a small park was created to memorialize him, located near SW 14th and Harvey.
This stood for decades until a group decided to move to a larger site and create a more expansive memorial.

In 2016, Manuel Perez Park was moved to a 27 acre plot of land just south of the river.

https://www.okgazette.com/oklahoma/m...nt?oid=2993234

Location:

The west end of the site (between Robinson and Shields) was formerly a part of Wiley Post Park.

This area has become an popular place for activities among the hispanic community of south OKC, particularly the Capitol Hill area.
For example, the Fiestas Patrias celebration has been held at Wiley Post Park the last few years:

source: https://www.facebook.com/scissortail...37508256315219

As have Cince De Mayo celebrations:

http://city-sentinel.com/2019/04/wil...o-celebration/

But the plans for Manuel Perez Park are more ambitious than just open landscape.

There is to be expanded recreation areas, basketball and futsal courts, and playgrounds.
Most importantly, a new plaza and memorial to Manuel Perez -- as well as to all war veterans.

These improvements to the park were expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
But there has been some delay, and it will clearly be later than that.

Planned Improvements

The Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park, which was around prior to the move, will be incorporated into the new park.
Intended primarily for BMX bikes, the sports park will have new areas added that are suited for skateboarding.
Also new basketball and futsal courts will be constructed nearby.

The Manuel Perez Memorial will be constructed near the center of the park.

Flying over the memorial will be an American Flag, an Oklahoma Flag, and a Medal of Honor flag.
The plaque honoring Manuel Perez will hang immediately underneath next to the words "We Remember".

A pavilion area and playground will be placed near the memorial.

The pavilion will include both standing and seated areas able to accomodate 240 people.

Playgrounds:

https://agenda.okc.gov/sirepub/view....fileid=4221405

As I mentioned earlier, the park was expected to be finished in 2019.
Since no activity has occurred yet, the schedule has clearly been pushed back.

Hopefully we'll see some signs of life on this project soon.

I think in the long run the Omni is an architectural disaster. It's a wall that feels omnipresent. Get it?

Hopefully, it's the omnipresent that keeps on giving!

I think it's going to give some good night views, at least.

Those "cheese grater" lights in the park have a neat effect...

Parlor OKC just had their official opening yesterday.
I've posted a number of times lately on this food hall, but Pete at OKCTalk has put together the definitive look at this new destination in Auto Alley:

Nice aerial shots of the terminal building in the Wheeler District:

https://deskgram.net/p/2127224866792145357_1271969511

This building, which was originally the terminal for the old OKC airpark, is being converted into a restaurant, a bar, and a community mailroom.

The area being cleared behind the terminal is for the The Big Friendly brewery and taproom to be constructed.

I've never yet gotten my hopes up for chain hotels/motels. And I put some of the blame on those that approve these projects, why some don't put their foot down and demand more attractive buildings. Partly because of the lack of competition. I'm talking about getting some Latin American hotel/motel developers up here, as I've stayed in too many of their hotels/motels on my 12 trips around South/Central America, where I would have been surprised if there were no balcony and/or rooftop deck, even in the 2 star facilities. I would never, ever stay in this hotel, as I gravitate to the older, well-maintained 60's/70's motels.

Contrasting urban images...

First, a nice shot of the CBD from the Midtown area:

https://deskgram.net/p/2127881132719768516_4535760108

A dense conglomerate of concrete and steel in the heart of the city.
The cranes for the Omni Hotel jut out in the background.

Then, just a mile or more to the south, and the view changes considerably:

A peaceful, almost rustic scene (save the ferris wheel).
Take a walk, a bike ride, or just laze around in a hammock.

Yet both are part of the modern city.

With only about 2 ½ weeks left until the grand opening, Scissortail Park is making a last minute push to get it all done in time.

ULI (Urban Land Institute) of Oklahoma just held a site tour of Social Capital OKC yesterday.

They heard from Bryce Thompson, one of the founders of this beer garden.

Sampled some of the offerings.

And, of course, checked out the view that the patio there will offer.

Nice! Great to hear this news.

This culminates the demolition of the east building in the FNC complex.

The building marked in red above has been the target of the demolition.

This work has been ongoing for quite awhile. Painstaking removal.

Brooks has reported that over 20 million tons of concrete and debris have been removed.
(wonder where it all went...)

The new parking garage ramp to be constructed will look like this:

A pedestrian bridge across the Bricktown Canal was replaced yesterday.

I'm not sure why the old one was replaced.
But, in any event, the new one looks fine, so... all good, I guess.

The Ellison Hotel

A new 5 story boutique hotel has been proposed for the Classen Curve area.
It will be a tribute hotel to Ralph Ellison.

https://www.inlandvalleynews.com/new...-ralph-ellison

Ellison was a writer, best known for his novel The Invisible Man.
He was born and raised in the Deep Deuce section of Oklahoma City, though he later became a long time resident of New York City, where he died.

This will be Oklahoma City's first hotel that is designed as part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio collection.
These are meant to be more unique, quirky boutique hotels that pay homage to people of note and have considerable interaction with the local cultural scene.

Renderings:

This will have 120 rooms with a rooftop swimming pool and bar, meeting space, a lounge, and a restaurant.
It is described as "high level service".

Quote:
Plains Management Group is set to start construction soon at the site just north of Whole Foods and part of the Triangle at Classen Curve.

To be named The Ellison Hotel after the renowned author, Plains has partnered with the Ralph Ellison Foundation and aims to expose visitors and guests to the artistic side of Oklahoma's creativity through local galleries, artists, programming and events.

Location:

This is scheduled to open in early 2021.

Velocity magazine has a nice writeup about the new OU Medical Center patient tower under construction:

OU Medical Center Making History With New Patient Bed Tower

quotes:
Quote:
This is the first ground-up hospital construction project for OU Medical Center since 1975...

The space was projected to be needed as the Stephenson Cancer Center gained notoriety. In 2018, Stephenson was named as the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Oklahoma.

“If we run out of beds, we have to send people to Dallas,” said Spicer. “So the growth we have is to keep more people here. It’s not to take away business from other hospitals in the city.”

“The largest operating rooms we have now are smaller than the operating rooms that are going in this tower,” he said.

When completed, the building will be the largest hospital campus building in the state.
Lots of construction stats provided as well.

The building has progressed since the article photo was taken, as revealed by the webcam.
