Science Channel Dives Into 'Secret History' of the Twin Towers in Memorial Day Weekend's 'Unearthed'

Anna Rumer
05/22/2020

Quote:
Described as "giants of their time" before the 9/11 terrorist attacks results in their collapse, the Twin Towers were considered "an engineering triumph" at the time of their construction in the 1970s, when they reigned high as the tallest buildings on earth. "The skyscraper has always been an engineering marvel, but it was the Twin Towers that really set the precedent," one expert explains in Sunday's episode preview.
Quote:
Having broken records in structural design innovation, top experts from around the world will educate viewers on some of the little-known details that make the Twin Towers such a cultural and historical landmark. "How do engineers push the boundaries of building tall to erect these towering giants in the heart of New York City?" Unearthed asks in PopCulture's exclusive preview. "To solve this mystery, we'll digitally reconstruct the towers and reveal the hidden secrets behind their iconic design, that once defined New York's skyline."

Don't miss the chance to learn more about two of the country's most iconic buildings and one of engineering's biggest accomplishments. The special Memorial Day edition of Unearthed airs Sunday, May 24 at 9 p.m. ET on the Science Channel.

By the looks of these early concepts of the hotel, it looks like there was originally going to be a L shape at the end of the hotel, but they decided not to use the L shape for the final design. I wonder why they didn't use the L shape design. However, I think the final design looked a lot better without the L shape at the end. Does anyone else agree?

Here's a 3D model of what the Twin Towers would look like if the final design of the hotel was L shaped:

Just watched this. Really showcased how the original complex changed the game and since 9/11. Fascinating.

I have also noticed starting with 7WTC pretty much all tall glass office buildings built since then, there is a pattern of 5/6/7 windows then a major steal reinforced concrete pillar, then 5/6/7 windows and another pillar and so on. 9/11 legacy in action.

Breathtaking in height and scale at it's time of construction, and would be even today. But I would like us to see something of a new scale in height built now.

^ Jesus. That must be from before 8:46am. I would pay a couple hundred bucks for that.

Edit: I've just read about that gentleman's story. Extraordinary. I wish he had opened his new repair shop at the Oculus like he wanted to.

I have a question. Why did the North Tower have two small walkways connected to its north and south facades, while the South Tower didn't have any walkways connected to its west and east facades?

These links to photos show that the North Tower had walkways connected to it:
