I don't think Essex on the Park has any control over what happens to the side of Johnson Publishing. I suppose they could convince the new developers with a financial incentive to improve the north facade. But otherwise, I would expect that a building built in the 70s is constructed entirely on it's lot line, not with a shared part wall. Therefore the next door owner has no ownership over it's design, treatment, or maintenance. (I'd also like to point out that there is another property owner - East West University - between Essex and Johnson Publishing).

The better question is how long that building will stick around. I guess rental apartments (presumably fairly cheap ones) are the only thing it’s suitable for.

edit: I see it’s been landmarked, presumably for political rather than artistic reasons. Oh well.

Don't know if you've seen the inside of the building but it's interior design is top tier, and that alone was worth saving. Additionally, the building has historic significance making it worth saving. I'm not gonna act like the exterior is wonderful, but that building was worth saving

For those who are interested about the Landmarking and history of Johnson Publishing: Here is the report:

https://www.cityofchicago.org/conten...ng_Co_Bldg.pdf

Much like the Essex Inn that was landmarked last year, Johnson publishing is one of three modernist buildings along the Michigan Boulevard street wall that were made eligible for landmarking (the only other that has not been proposed yet is 200 S Michigan, the former BorgWarner Tower).

If you skip to the end of the report, Johnson Publishing was considered to meet four of the seven criteria for designation (only 3 are required). Meanwhile Essex was considered to meet three.

Fair enough. I have of course only seen the outside, which looks a bit like a very tall parking garage.

The core should now have surpassed the roof height of the East West University building on Wabash, making this currently the tallest building on the block.

I think this design fits better than the previous exposed X support. These 4 buildings blend together better this way.

Those X-beams would look really sexy, if well lit, somwhere along the park at night. Maybe possibly somewhere in the future.

Concur, i also like how this building fits nicely along Michigan and doesn't try to stand out unlike 1000.

Glass installation on the tower above the podium has begun. You can see some nice green glass on the north and west sides. I think it looks pretty good. Also looks like the metal panel cladding has been started but the plastic protection is still on the panels so you cannot see the color. We should get a pretty good idea how this thing will look in the next couple weeks. So far, so good imho

Is that a helipad above the Hilton, and if so when was the last time it was used?
