I was dismayed to learn recently that this and the other William Henry Jackson photos of Los Angeles, formerly at the Denver Public Library,
are no longer hosted there. Also gone are this 1887 panorama (CHS.J3927 and CHS.J3928) and this 1901 image (CHS.J3108) looking north
from 3rd and Broadway, among others.

My inquiry to the DPL about the photos received this answer: "Unfortunately, those photos belong to History Colorado and, after the move to
our new system, we are no longer hosting them. Hopefully, they will become available through the HC website." Maybe if enough of us contact
History Colorado we'll get to see the photos again!


UPDATE: I phoned History Colorado where a helpful representative directed me to this link . . . if you enter "Los Angeles" next to "All Title"
you will get the WH Jackson photos of Los Angeles, though unfortunately in low resolution only. The object ID numbers from the Denver Public
Library no longer seem to work . . . the 1887 panorama, which was CHS.J3927 and CHS.J3928, is now 86.200.7000 and 86.200.7001.


About the above courthouse photo . . . it appears the strip of grass above the excavation for the tunnel, which led to the elevator (the cab is
at the second floor), is still growing in. So the picture was likely taken in early, rather than late, 1899:




The tunnel was built in the second half of 1898, around the same time as the outside elevator:

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors named Benjamin F. Talbot the first operator of the courthouse's outside elevator:

There were some problems with the new elevator's power and controlling that power. It was written that Talbot's most faithful friend
"could hardly predict success for him in his new position":

I see that the seller says this is Long Beach. If Long Beach had wooden stairs
I had forgotten all about them.

e_r, I think the site of the steps is in the distance in this shot:

I believe the house in your picture on the top of the bluff of which we can see a corner above the hamburger stand is the smaller, more distant, structure in my pic. Maybe it's my imagination, but I think I can see a hint of the stairs in my pic--not the dark blotch at center, but a little farther.

Is that the Myers/Bixby mansion on the bluff? If those are the same stairs, they were just west of the mansion, as seen in this c. 1929 aerial.
That's Bixby Park at the top of the photo. I've arrowed the foot of the stairs; the building to the left seems to match e_r's photo:

There appears to be a short wooden bridge and atop the hill a wall with a huge gate(?).

I couldn't help but noticed the hotel sign on the roof of the building in the foreground. Does anyone know what hotel that is . . .or whether or not it's still there?

It appears the name is below the word hotel on the sign but I can't make it.

e_r, This turns out to be very close to or perhaps the same location as another set of wooden stairs in Long Beach you posted in a group of eBay photographs back in January. The location of that photo was identified as what is now Bluff Place in Long Beach.

I wondered what that little 'loop' was at the top of the sign - now I see that it is the top of the elongated L in Livingstone but it only works if you're looking at it in the opposite direction.

This is likely Mr. Ernest J. Hamer Sr. in his butcher shop at 4313 S. Figueroa St, he would have been age 35 here....his parents, Adolph and Gertrude Hamer, operated a grocery business adjacent at 4311 S. Figueroa...the joint enterprise was known as Hamer & Son as per the 1927 street directory....

Note that Ernest is shown in business with his wife Viola....Ernest married the former Viola Rees on 1/19/1914 (image courtesy FamilySearch)....






...the family home was a few blocks away at 400 W. 47th St....1920 census....






....the storefronts were constructed in 1922....






....Ernest Hamer Sr. died in 1967.....






The buildings on Figueroa are gone, as is the family home, which was in the path of the 110 Fwy.

It all gets a bit more confusing because there appears to have been a Deaconess Home on the corner of Sunset and Custer that was being turned into a hospital in 1907.

I just found this earlier article (from March 9, 1904) that places the Deaconess Home at the corner of Custer and Bellevue Ave.

(of course this is an entirely different issue from the Clara Barton / Deanconess Hospital downtown at 447 S. Olive Street)
