Moving to Winnipeg with Child

Hello all,

I am looking to moving to Winnipeg from Brandon, hoping for work.

I haven't lived here in over five years, and would like to know what the better areas for families with school age children going to French Immersion.

I used to enjoy the North and East Kildonan areas before kids. Is it still a nice place to live?

Sun Valley School.....one of the best French Immersion schools in the city.

Can't go wrong with North Kildonan and better yet I live there!

It depends on if you mean English as a first language or French as a first language. St Boniface is a strong area for French language as a whole.

I would imagine french immersion is best in St Boniface, St Vital or St Norbert non?

Stick to St Vital. Less Drama then those NK and St B folks.

No, not really. Curriculum is defined by the Province.

Wherever teachers are required for French immersion, or whatever that other type of French school is, the teachers will go there.

There are three types of French immersion programs in MB

1. Classes taught in French but in a mixed English/French school.
2. A full French school for students with English as a first language.
3. A full French school for students for first language in French (Francis).

There are pros and cons on both sides of the first two choices. If the third choice is applicable, chances are you are fluent in French yourself as a parent.

I live in St Norbert and have never heard French.

Curriculum may be defined by the province, but each school division has its own collective agreement. So teachers in certain divisions are paid more than others, and in theory that would attract the better teachers. On the flip side, those school divisions would collect more taxes on your property tax bill.

French language schools (French as a primary language) have their own school division across the province. In Winnipeg those schools are in the aforementioned St B/St Vital/St Norbert areas. I believe the school division portion of the students parents property tax bill is remitted to the province wide division rather than their home school division.

But yeah, French immersion is offered across the city. I would assume the higher funded school divisions would have the better French immersion programs, but would also have higher taxes.

You have any other requirements besides the French immersion? Renting, Buying? etc..

Might help posters give you some other ideas..

Just being in North America is English immersion... from my experiences traveling and studying in Quebec I'd say the average young Quebecker is far more proficient in English than their Manitoba counterparts are in French.

I was being facetious, of course they don't, exactly why most Quebecers are unemployable outside Quebec (Ottawa). While young people around the world all learn English in school Quebec still lives in it's unilingual bubble.

Just listen to some of the young Winnipeg Jets players like Ehlers, Dano, Armia etc. Whose command of English is outstanding. Most in European countries understand learning English is essential. Thanks to the FLQ and papa Trudeau the majority was told they needed to learn the language of the minority while the minority could just stick to their own language and ignore the language of the majority!

Haha, but its actually a good question. I really have no clue what goes on in Quebec. And don't really care to be honest.
