^ why should the plans impact 24 hour status? I say, if you locate in an airport zone, that's entirely your own problem. Caveat emptor!

I agree that's the way it SHOULD be, but there is plenty of precedent of people who decide they need to change the rules once they move near an airport, or factory or any kind of industrial area. It would take a politician with a firm spine to tell those people "too bad, you made your decision", and those are, sadly, few and far between. I fully understand why the WAA doesn't want to potentially trust their fate to legislators who would rather be popular to whomever they are taking to at that moment.

I'd say that the city pass a bylaw guaranteeing their 24 hour status and then allow CF to proceed.

Yup. Could even make a bylaw that forces developers/landlords in the airport vicinity to clearly put some sort of acknowledgement clause to renters/buyers that they're are moving into an airport zone. Essentially wave your right to complain or whatever.

Again, I agree, but a law can be overturned if someone whines hard enough or their lawyer wants to make a name for themselves and claims enforcing an airport zone infringes upon someone's constitutional rights or something.

Definitely an interesting tour if you can get in on one. I was on one a couple years back. It might be a little different but we go to see the inside of the baggage handling area and some other normally non-public parts of the airport which I cannot remember. The tour escort was also one of the senior staff at the airport and fairly approachable and open to questions.

In terms of the 24 hours operational status of the airport perhaps something could be done in terms of taxiways at the airport to allow planes to take off towards the north instead of the current south flight plans. Also the primary runway seems to be lineup with Mount Royal and doesn't cross the CF site. The CF site is mostly used for smaller planes and as a backup runway when the main one is not available. Perhaps CF putting in cash to develop the second main runway that has been seen on some airport plans could help get their development plans approved.

^ I definitely see planes taking off toward the north (runway 18) on a routine basis. Same with the SE (runway 31). I'm no aviation guy so I'm not sure what factors go into the decision of which runway to use, but I see both in regular use all the time.

Wind direction is usually the main factor in deciding runway use, then operational requirements. Since the prevailing winds in winnipeg are out of the NW the typical runway use will be taking off in that direction to have a nose into the wind on takeoffs.

The pushes on 737 Max return to mid February have started. This will likely result in another round of schedule changes in Winnipeg.

Do we have AC Rouge service now? I was out by the airport yesterday and spotted one of their narrowbodies taking off.

Probably filling in during the continuing Max grounding.

I was on a different website today and found out that the US TSA has a program to allow visitors at select airports to be able to go thru the screening lines and either see people off or meet them in the secure air side locations or eat and shop in the secure areas.

Detroit Metro Airport is looking at doing it and SEATAC had a pilot program in 2018 and Tampa International does it every Saturday from 0800 to 2000. Tampa markets it as you can eat at food places on the secure side or shop at the speciality stores.

I'm wondering does anybody know if CATSA allows this at any major airport in Canada?

Any word on what's happening with the Greyhound terminal? Last time I was by the airport a couple months back, it looked like it was empty. Is WAA going to demolish it and replace it with parking? It's only 10 years old but I can't imagine what purpose it could really serve now. Maybe a rental car centre?

My last conversation with the WAA has it is slated for demolition.

^ Interesting. I'd like to think that there is some room for compromise on this one.

"In the spirit of collaboration" we want our way. "We remain committed to....protect the 24 hour status...." of the airport, but we're happy to risk that to build a few apartment blocks. IMO this is a cheap and nasty trick by CF to simply get their apartment blocks built for their own profit margin. I don't believe or a second they care one whit whether the airport loses their 24 hour status or not.

No I think they're the sane ones here and realize that it's ridiculous to not allow more development here. There's already lots of residential in the immediate area. They also realize that planes are way quieter now than 30 years ago, and could easily have a note when tenants sign that they are in an airport zone, and that won't change. This isn't complicated.

This could have tremendous benefit for the area and city, by filling in parking lots and looking at further transit improvements in St. James.

This is coming at a perfect time as CF and the City/Transit could work together to figure out how to make a major transit/RT station at Polo as part of the new TMP.
