I might have to pop into Brandon and try it if I'm out that way sometime soon... the perceived hype about this place makes me want to try it.

Then again, I have not yet tried the poutine at Smokes, so thats first!

Search on for new revolving-restaurant operator

By: Murray McNeill

Posted: 07/15/2011 1:00 AM

"THE managers of Fort Garry Place are anxious to get the Garry Street building's revolving restaurant spinning again after 2 1/2 years of it sitting idle.

Edison Rental Agency has Bob Borys, a leasing specialist with the Winnipeg office of Colliers International, beating the bushes for a new operator for the unique property, which sits atop the highrise residential/commercial complex and offers a bird's eye view of the downtown and The Forks.

And Borys isn't limiting his search to Winnipeg.

He's marketing the property to restaurant chains throughout Canada, as well as to restaurateurs on the east and west coasts of the United States who have experience operating revolving restaurants.

"I've been dealing with one company out of Florida and they've expressed an extreme interest," Borys said in an interview.

"The difficulty is finding a local operator (to manage it for them). They want someone who knows the market and the people."

Borys and Edison general manager Frank Koch-Shulte said they don't have a deadline for getting a deal done because they want to get the right restaurant and the right operator."

Anyone know why that gorgeous rooftop patio on the new Santa Lucia isn't being used?

What type of restaurant would do well atop Fort Gary Place?

- Moxies
- Perkins
- Olive Garden
- Red Lobster
- Grapes

F: none of the above.

A chain restaurant is not what you want in this location. Something unique and higher end. It would have to be a real destination to bring in customers. I don't think many people would go downtown and pay to park for a Red Lobster or Perkins type thing.

A chain restaurant wouldn't bother with that location anyways.

Most chains want to stick with their standard architectural format and wouldn't want a gimmicky revolving restaurant.

I agree with the former, but there are a couple of levels there. I would have a high end level (formal dining) and a touristy level (not cheap, but standard fare burgers etc.).

Eatery closed during construction project
Ritzy apartments being built above

By: Murray McNeill

Posted: 08/26/2011 1:00 AM

The Lobby on York restaurant has closed for about two months while the building's owner builds four ritzy apartments on the floor above.

The steak and seafood restaurant is located on the main floor of 160 Smith -- the new name for the former Sheraton Hotel/York the Hotel in downtown Winnipeg.

The restaurant, whose full name is The Lobby on York -- Modern, Steak and Seafood, has been closed since Aug. 15 when the 15 employees were given temporary layoff notices, said general manager Shan Shuwera.

Shuwera said it would have been too noisy in the restaurant with construction work going on overhead. He said the restaurant's owners hope to reopen it around the Thanksgiving long weekend.

But a spokesman for the building's owner, Toronto-based Timbercreek Asset Management, said it will likely be late October or early November before the eatery reopens.

Colleen O'Rourke, Timbercreek's regional manager, said that's how long it will likely take to build the four second-floor "luxury apartments."

She said the two-bedroom units will be about 1,200 square feet in size, but will have higher ceilings, higher-end finishings and a different design than the other one- and two-bedroom apartments in the 21-storey building.

"They'll have a New York loft sort of feel and design."
