/\ Can't find it online. All I see an article debating the merits of keeping the original for historical reasons.

I assume that the timing also has to do with the release of the funds.

For those who have not seen it, this video shows how much better the approaches will be.

A new report estimates the cost of saving the Walterdale Bridge at $20 million

The proposed arch design has been chosen as the best option for the replacement of the Walterdale Bridge. The design was chosen over girder, extra-dosed and cable styles, and can be built lower to the North Saskatchewan River without putting supports into the water, reports indicate.

EDMONTON - The historic Walterdale Bridge’s days may be numbered after a report Thursday indicated saving it will cost $20 million and might detract from its “signature” replacement.

A new arch bridge is being built beside the nearly century-old Walterdale, and several city councillors have asked whether the bridge can be preserved for non-motorized traffic.

Ideas:
Turn the deck into a mini-golf course, not enough of those around town.
Add a zip-line from the High Level to Walterdale, though that would be insanely long.
Too bad the bridge wasn't taller, could add a bungie attraction too.

EDMONTON - The future is looking bleaker for the historic Walterdale Bridge after a city report said turning it into a restaurant venue could cost up to $25 million.

A three-lane “signature” replacement for the Walterdale is scheduled to open beside it in 2015, and although plans call for demolishing the 98-year-old structure, some councillors want it saved.

I'm going to miss driving on the old Walterdale's steel deck.

I wonder if $13 million savings to delete the west sidewalk is enough to refurbish the old bridge. The steel deck would need to be replaced with something more suitable for walking/cycling/rollerblading/skateboarding on. Steel truss bridges are a dying breed here. The Americans probably spend a bit too much money preserving heritage infrastructure but keeping a few wouldn't hurt.

Bikeing /walking on a mutiuse trail attachd to a motor bridge isn't nearly as pleasant as on a dedicated pedestrian/cycle bridge. please please please keep the old bridge.

You would think it would be cheaper to keep the bridge and just use it for pedestrian/cyclists, then it would be to dismantle it... I guess a little work would need to be done though since pedestrians and cyclists couldn't exactly use the steel grate that is the bridge deck now. Depending what steel is going for these days, they may be able to offset the cost of dimantling by recycling?

I definately do not agree with any commercial on the bridge, but i think it would be great just to have a greenspace bridge with multiuse trail if it wasnt to cost prohibitive...Its already been said here that structurally not much should need to be done considering the bridge would no longer be carrying thousands of cars and busses per day, but simply foot traffic and non motorized modes of tranportation...

Other than making sure that the bridge doesn't collapse under its own weight.

I'm going to Edmonton next weekend, I should capture the sounds of driving across that bridge. One of my many early childhood memories of Edmonton.
