I agree completely. I just looks cheap and poorly put together whenever I see it.

there's really nothing left of the original vegas anymore. places like the stardust, flamingo and the sands were the epitome of vegas in the 60's.

it's a shame because vegas was better then and when it was run by the mob and not corporations.

untrue what about The New Frontier (1942), Flamingo (1946), Sahara (1952), Riveria (1955), Tropicana (1958), Caesars Palace (1966), Circus Circus (1968), Hilton (1969) are still standing on or near the strip.

Then you have all the hotels downtown relatively unchanged since the 1950s such as Golden Nugget, Binions, Plaza, Four Queens, Fremont, El Cortez and the Golden Gate opened originally as the Hotel Nevada in 1906 all standing the test of time.

Tourist figures indicate Vegas is better now than anytime in the past. I am sure Dunes, Sands etc were great places to gamble but what has replaced them in Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, Echelon Place, Project City Center etc are meccas, expensive yes, but amazing fun none the less.

An interesting site on imploded Vegas Hotels of yesteryear.

gimmie the dunes or the sands any day over the tacky overpriced joints like the bellagio or the venetian.

The Sands, Landmark Tower and Stardust are the ones I've hated to see go. Those are the ones I think of most when I think "Vegas".

They're saying that the Stardust was the fourth tallest building in the world ever imploded (not counting chimneys and towers)

Anyway, big cities back east, like Chicago and New York, have demolished a hundred times more large buildings than Vegas ever will.

Probably because New York and Chicago have thousands and thousands more buildings than Las Vegas ever will.

According to research J.L. Hudson Department Store in Detroit at 439 ft is the tallest building ever imploded followed by the Landmark Tower in Fort Worth, Tx at 380 ft.

Stardust was 335ft so it is possibly the 4th tallest building in the world ever imploded alrite

I don't know if anyone here is aware, but SBE Entertainment bought the Sahara (one of the last famous strip hotels from the 50's) and could be renovating it to something more like what it once was. I haven't heard any official plans though but I'm sure something will happen soon. Has anyone heard anything? I hope they don't give up on it and tear it down!

The latest is that Larry Wolf's Navegante group will be managing the casino for a few years while Nazarian's team gets gaming licenses and learn how to operate a casino. It currently has 1,720 rooms (small by Vegas standards), but there's not a lot of land there to add more buildings, so Nazarian said they'll keep it the same size and market it differently. Just change the facade, update the infrastructure, remodel the interior and probably add a night club. The casino, restaurants and hotel will remain open during renovation, as far as we know. Nothing has happened so far. I kind of doubt if they'll keep the NASCAR Cafe and roller coaster. Also, haven't heard any talk of changing the name.

But more pertinent to this thread is the rumor that the New Frontier will be imploded November 13 at 2am.
