Modernism can't come close to the warmth and beauty of old beaux-arts, and other styles that offer detail on the façade. That building is a beauty. Just compare it to those glass and steel monoliths behind, no comparison there. No wonder Paris is considered the most beautiful large city in the world. Even though I tend towards the hyper futuristic, sometimes I think the past is actually better.

Kudos to Monyihan for having the foresight to put the station there. Pity he didn't live to see it. On the topic of people not seeing their work complete: I hope ol' Silverstein also gets to see his work finally done. I'm sure he's a good sort and is not the greedy selfish dude that most people make out on here.

It's similar in a way to the new LIRR terminal at Grand Central, though that one will have new patforms built underneath existing ones. It will all flow together as one station.

Eventually, when the Hotel Pennsylvania is demolished, we will have a direct connection to the PATH terminal, as well as more subway lines. That will be very similar to the current Fulton Terminal - WTC PATH Station - Brookfield Place continuous pedestrian concourse. It will stretch from 6th Ave & Broadway all the way to 9th Avenue and the Hudson Yards.
Therefore the LIRR could have 2 stops in the same station? One stop at old Penn Station and the other stop at new Moynhian Station?
The Path connection will be through the Hilton corridor?

I don't understand the confusion about the "stops". There are multiple tracks at Penn Station. On any given day, the trains stop on multiple tracks. Nothing will change.

But the corridor that will connect Penn to the Path was supposed to be reopened with the demolition of Penn Station and construction of 15 Penn.

So excited to see this moving forward, really interested to see what restorations will take place on the historic facades just as much as all the new additions.

The city needs to demo Penn and rebuild if it's really committed to improving rail...

More important than that is getting those new hudson river tunnels built. Other than that, this new station goes a long way towards what a completely rebuilt Penn would. Sadly, the kind of grand construction of the original wouldn't happen today. What you would get is what we are in fact getting now. The problem is the original never should have been destroyed.

I hope there is a rezoning effort around MSG similar to Midtown East. Not that we need the space at the moment, but given how long they take nows the time to start planning.

The buildings just south of the current MSG/Penn/Moynhian complex should also be bought up to truly expand the capacity of the station.

Looks fine. An improvement anyway. It's no grand Victorian railway station of course.

What really needs to happen now is the complete redevelopment of the whole block that MSG sits on, but that will probably never happen.

Yeah, as I understand, restoring the old station won't do much for improving operational capacity. As far as I know, the current station is basically the same as the old, as the tracks and platforms are the same. What get lost with the old station was the comfort and convenience of the larger waiting rooms and halls; and of course, the grandiosity and beauty of it. Some people advocate to stop using it as a terminal and let trains continue to NJ or Long Island, so they don't need to ocuppy so many tracks.

Anyway, here's a panorama of the station as it was in 1910, just inaugurated Pretty interesting vista, as you not only see the station, but the old Post Office and the then much more modest skyline of Midtown Manhattan (nevertheless, by that time, it must have been pretty impressive) with the tallest tower being the Times Building.

In this link you can get that panorama at a VERY high resolution, along with many other spectacular panoramas and maps of old New York in high resolution.
