Not that there isn't some charm to the 1964 modernization by William Hirch, but...from what I hear tell the facade changes are pretty cosmetic and those Louis Sullivan portholes can still be seen from within! There's nothing structural (despite what the owner claims, apparently) about the facade changes and I can only wistfully contemplate how cool it would be to return them to their former glory.

Granted, we may never quite get back to their former glory, exactly...

Beaudry, thank you for the spectacular elucidation in response to my question about the Merchants Trust Bldg. I am familiar with the old YMCA building, but never made the connection to the subsequent Merchants Trust; smacking my head now.

And WOW, it's still here! The building at least appears to be well-kept, but of course I pine for the original facade. Perhaps it will emerge someday...

I always wondered how looked this section that the car leaves behind coming from east 2nd.
That modern structure was an extensively remodeled 1880s apartment house-I've only seen a WPA 1936/37 drawing of the original appearance- No other image or even a name for it has turned up- So post-war money was spent to redo it radically --

La mano Tortillas located 9237 Whittier Blvd Pico Rivera. This building has lots of Touches of Noir! To me it looks like it could have maybe been a bank or a post office can someone help me out?

I've got your watercress right here . . . .

It's 1888 and we've got an errand to run. Let's head east on Aliso Street toward the LA River. After crossing Alameda, on our left there's Old Aliso, and then just before the river we'll come to Keller. Sainsevain runs parallel to Aliso one block to the south:

1888 Sanborn at LAPL

At the corner of Aliso and Old Aliso, we pass the Los Angeles Cracker Co:

CA State Library -- http://catalog.library.ca.gov/F/AXAR...001&format=999

1888 Sanborn @ LAPL (I guess they needed an eight-foot-high adobe wall on the north side of Old Aliso to keep people out of the vineyard):

1887 LA City Directory @ Fold3.com

We'll stay on Aliso until we get to Keller, then we'll turn left:

1894 Sanborn @ LAPL

We're looking for Joe the watercress vendor. I ain't making this up:

1886 LA City Directory @ Fold3.com

Joe gets his ass in gear pretty early, so we've got to hurry to catch him. Look, there he is on Keller Street -- Hey Joe, wait up!

CA State Library -- http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...BLPQNBVES7.jpg

Maybe the donkey's best side is its right?

CA State Library -- http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...5HB799QCM8.jpg

Joe has his boots and empty basket and so appears to be on his way to harvest some watercress. I wonder where he gets it? Perhaps he tends a watercress bed by a zanja or the LA River?

lol....amusing post! Wedge!

Like it's name, watercress needs running water to flourish. Watercress is aquatic.

So at one moment, Old Aliso Road became Lyon Street and kept its starting very at a slant from Aliso until the 1950s when it disappeared with the El Monte Busway. It's always the first thing I spot when I look to photos of the section... These streets which break the square are attractive. I remember Tovangar being sensitive on the end of Los Angeles Street at a sharp angle with Alameda Street (disappeared too) [716 #14 318].

-short apple blossom street makes me wonder if a section of the vineyard was set aside for an apple orchard.

I was hoping to find Aliso Street's namesake, El Aliso...the 400 year old Sycamore, somewhere on the Philadelphia Brewery property.
Do you think it could be that round circle?

According to tovanger2 at http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10490, the famous tree stood on the property until 1892.

This little three story building is so great Flyingwedge. Just for fun, here's an ad from May of 1883.

My guess is that it was once a bank.

Unfortunately, the tree is not shown on the Sanborn map:

1888 Sanborn Map @ LAPL

I gather from reading T2's post that the tree was in the court yard between the two wings of the brewery complex, facing Aliso (above the last A in PHILADELPHIA BREWERY).

-That's too bad...thank you anyway Flyingwedge. The people at Sanborn probably didn't realize the significance of the tree.

Thanks again jaco for the information on the 'Volunteers of America' in Boyle Heights.
I was hoping the building still stands.
