Couldn't have said it better myself! Great shots of the progress, and how they are starting to look and take shape! Exciting!

Ramada plans timber tower

It’s worked so well in Penticton that they are going to give it a try in Kelowna, too.

The Ramada by Wyndham Kelowna Hotel and Conference Centre, located at the corner of Harvey Avenue and Dilworth Road, wants to build a 12-storey tower that will feature approximately 83 new rooms. The big difference, however, is it will be constructed with primarily mass timber.

Penticton Lakeside Resort built a six-storey addition two and a half years ago using mass timber, and now the Ramada is going to follow in its footsteps.

“This mass timber construction is admired both by young and old, which is kind of key,” Lakeside Resort general manager David Prystay said. “Anybody who is concerned about the environment and concerned about the future of this planet should embrace this type of technology.”

Prystay plans to oversee the project with Ramada Kelowna GM Stan Martindale, as both hotels are properties of RPB Holdings Ltd. Prystay said it was a “no-brainer” to go with mass timber for the Ramada expansion after seeing how successful it has been in Penticton.

“It’s a different clientele we’re going to be attracting now with this style of wood,” he said. “People are willing to pay a little more to experience this style of room and this style of construction. It does cost a little more than regular construction, so the price is passed on to the consumer, but we’ve never had anybody balk at the numbers, which are not bad at all.”

The Ramada, which currently has 125 hotel rooms, will submit its development plan to the City of Kelowna by Dec. 20. If all goes well, the shovels will go in the ground next summer or fall. It will take between 18 and 24 months to build, Prystay said.

“It’s a renewable resource,” he said. “It’s very green. It’s good for the environment. It helps combat global warming. It’s all the good things in life.

“It creates jobs in B.C. It’s all B.C.-based jobs for the wood, the timber and for the development through Structurlam and Greyback Construction.”

That's pretty cool! I'm assuming they're using CLT? Nice to see these building methods become more frequent.

I'm not a fan of wood frame multi-storey apartment buildings. Bought into 1 once and would never do it again. This timber frame trend on the other hand I think is great. Maybe still not for a residential building, but for an office building or in this case a hotel, I think is very cool.

New design is largely the same but a little shorter at 129.22 meters.

Still a decent height for Kelowna

There's more important changes in the document about the Westcorp Downtown Hotel than height.

Notably:
-Added parking
-Better interface with the street on Water St
-More units

Still a bit large for my liking for that location but the changes especially those to do with the podium make it more palatable.

The shadow study does illustrate there will be impacts north of it particularly on the promenade and roundabout northeast of the tower

I hope they start on the hotel in 2020. It’s been a long time coming. I want to see this thing get built. I’d love to go to the restaurant on the 17th floor. That would be so awesome with the views. Summer in the Okanagan would be so great seeing the lake from that view.

So here are a few elevations and renders from the report.

I have a feeling this is the final version.

Something just feels more serious this time around.

That balcony is huge. Great choice to put in a mid level restaurant. I ate at Perch back in September and it was really a nice experience with great views and all, and they made some pretty wicked sandwiches.

If the view is anything like the rendering, might just have to make an unofficial stop in Kelowna to check this building out once complete!
