Park City could be dubbed Hollywood hills by Sundance 2015 - Quinn's Junction movie studio might be operating later this year

The Park City Film Studios will be developed at Quinn's Junction after the developer reached an agreement with Park City leaders for the project. When Hollywood returns to Park City for the Sundance Film Festival's 2015 edition, a future festival entry could be under production not far from the hubbub of Sundance.

By the time Sundance 2015 has started in January, a developer hopes to have built and opened the first buildings in a movie-studio complex planned along Park City's S.R. 248 entryway. It would be a milestone in the long-running efforts to locate a studio complex in the Park City area, and it is not clear whether the developer, a firm called Quinn's Junction Partnership, will have made that much progress by the time Sundance opens next year.

Greg Ericksen, whose family trust owns Quinn's Junction Partnership, said in an interview during Sundance he anticipates the first soundstages could be operating by the fall of this year.

The developer last fall held a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site with state political, business and film-industry leaders, and Ericksen said this week construction is expected to start when the ground thaws.
The facility will be called the Park City Film Studios. It will be located on a little more than 29 acres at the southwest corner of Quinn's Junction, where U.S. 40 and S.R. 248 meet. The City Hall approval allows 374,000 square feet of development. The largest building at the site will be a little more than 90,000 square feet in size and primarily house lodging space, a recording studio and a
spa. The second largest of the buildings -- 73,000 square feet -- would primarily consist of soundstages.

The Park City Film Studios, which will be developed at Quinn's Junction, will feature a virtual stage designed for digital filmmaking. The virtual stage is expected to be operating when the first buildings open, which is anticipated in the fall. Courtesy of Park City Film Studios

There are also plans for a building to be used for entertainment purposes, a building for an effects stage, a studio store and studio tours.
The developer earlier reached an agreement with Raleigh Studios, a Hollywood company that bills itself as the nation's largest independent studio operator. Raleigh Studios is expected to anchor the studio in Park City. Quinn's Junction Partnership has said Raleigh Studios signed a 20-year lease with a renewal option after the first 20 years.

Quinn's Junction Partnership last year inked a deal with a state-run Chinese firm known as National Film Capital of China that will bring an international presence to the Park City Film Studios.

The supporters of the studio see it as a facility that will be important as Park City further diversifies its tourism-heavy economy, citing the prospects of job creation, among other benefits. They also say that Park City Film Studios will be a nice addition to Utah's film industry. There is also a chance, it seems, of some sort of partnership involving Park City Film Studios and the organizers of Sundance.

The chief opposition to the project came from some Park City officials. The Park City Planning Commission advanced the project to the Park City Council with a negative recommendation as a majority of the lower panel outlined a range of development-related concerns. The City Council itself approved the project on a split vote that illustrated the continuing concerns about the development.

The Park City Film Studios during Sundance set up an informational location in a small space along lower Main Street, inside a festival rental organized by the Utah Film Commission. The developers showcased renderings illustrating the architecture of the buildings planned at the complex and played videos describing the eventual capabilities of the Park City Film Studios.

Ericksen said the setup at Sundance was "more informational" in nature and was not meant to be critical to the studio's marketing efforts. He was not sure how much business could be generated in the Main Street space during the festival.

"Sundance is the opportunity for the state of Utah . . . to educate people of what's available in Utah," he said.

Park City Film Studios this month, meanwhile, started to install a technology known as digital motion capture and virtual stage, according to a prepared statement released by the studio just before the start of Sundance. It is described as "a key part of the studios' planned technology platform."

"The platform provides our clients with a comprehensive virtual filmmaking capability," Ericksen said in the prepared statement.

Museum of Natural Curiosity ~ Coming This Spring

Cool Fly Through Video Tour @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvZA04-S7NA

Museum of Natural Curiosity

The Museum of Natural Curiosity at Thanksgiving Point broke ground in October 2012, and construction on the LEED-certified 45,000-square-foot space is expected to wrap up by
spring 2014. "It's different than a regular kids' museum," says Lorie Millward, Curator of Curiosity. "We tried to create a space for intergenerational activity—where kids, parents and
grandparents can interact."

The museum's five galleries and 150 exhibits will focus on principles of engineering, physics and math, along with art, history and culture. The Museum of Natural Curiosity is scheduled to
open to the public in spring 2014

FFKR Architects (EngergySolutions Arena, Abravanel Hall), Okland Construction (Grand America Hotel, Gateway) and designers Roto Group (Utah's Hogle Zoo) teamed up for
project.

Construction is nearing completion on Utah's newest children's museum--the Museum of Natural Curiosity at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. The new
museum will include five interactive exhibit areas: Rainforest,
Kidopolis, Waterworks, Children's Discovery Garden and Traveling Exhibits.

http://falkinassociates.com

"This Museum will complement both Thanksgiving Point's current offerings
and the museums throughout the state with its unique indoor-
outdoor concept and specific focus on science. It will offer those of all
ages a chance to reconnect with the world through active play," said
Mike Washburn, Thanksgiving Point CEO.

Sears Demolition

Deseret News

Deseret News - Emilee Eager

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...-Dillards.html

MURRAY — Shoppers at the Fashion Place Mall heard some rumblings Wednesday as crews demolished the Sears department store.

The store was razed to make way for a newer and bigger site for Dillard's, which will be moving from the north to the south end of the mall.

"Economic impact is going to be all pluses for us," said Tim Tingey, director of administrative and development services for Murray.

The new Dillard's is scheduled to move into the new 200,000-square-foot building — about a 20,000-square-foot expansion — in the spring of 2015. Tingey said the store will be a "strong anchor" for the mall and the community.

"It will enhance our tax base. It will enhance our sales tax revenue. It will provide great amenities for our community as far as the shopping opportunities," Tingey said. "We couldn’t be happier with some of the changes that are occurring over there."

Celeste Dorris, general manager of Fashion Place, said the new store will not only be larger but will have an improved store design and technology. "Fashion Place is a successful shopping center, and Dillard's has done really well here," she said.

Macy's closed its doors at the mall earlier this month. The Container Store will fill the 25,000-square-foot space sometime in the fall, Dorris said.

"All of these things are part of a strategic vision for the property to make sure that we're keeping things fresh and new for consumers," she said. "It's all been very intentional and strategic on our part to make sure we're addressing the needs of our consumers."

Tingey said the Container Store will be a strong addition for the mall. He said there are negotiations to fill the north Dillard's location when it moves next year.

Overall, Dorris said, sales have been going well for the mall over the past few years.

"That's one of the reasons why we've seen so much interest from retailers coming in from other markets for the first time in Utah, like the Container Store," she said...

...Chaftang said American Eagle will also be renovating. On Sunday, the store will move to another site in the mall for eight weeks before moving back. She, too, expects the Dillard's presence at the south end of the mall will increase traffic...

Metro Salt Lake Forumer's favorite whipping boy is about to get a major makeover

Downtown Update

New owner of Salt Lake City’s Shilo Inn will make it a Holiday Inn - Facelift » Decades-old hotel to receive $10 million overhaul to its 200 rooms, exterior.

http://www.shiloinns.com

By TONY SEMERAD | The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57...shilo.html.csp

Downtown Salt Lake City’s iconic Shilo Inn has been sold and its new Cedar City-based owners are promising to renovate the aging hotel and relaunch it as a Holiday Inn.

The neon-lined hotel, at 206 S. West Temple next to the Salt Palace Convention Center, will see a major overhaul of its 200 guest rooms, lobby and common areas as well as its exterior, said Jim Burgess, president of the privately held Burgess Investment Group, which bought the site late last week.

The Shilo Inn will get a complete facelift — including removal of its glaring red neon features.

"It’ll look like a new hotel when it’s done," Jim Burgess said. "The goal is for no-one to know it’s a conversion."...

Massive fire burns in downtown Salt Lake City

(Lennie Mahler | The Salt Lake Tribune) Firefighters battle a four-alarm fire near downtown Salt Lake City, Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

By Micahel Mcfall | The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57...oject.html.csp

Towering smoke and spiraling embers filled the sky as an under-construction building project in downtown Salt Lake City turned into an inferno Sunday.

It took at least 60 firefighters a little more than an hour Sunday evening to douse a four-alarm fire at the building, at 550 E. 500 South.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation...

Before Fire, recent update from just a few days ago. Newhouse Apartments (5th S across from Smiths) exterior windows and doors are being installed.

Central Metro East - Utah Olympic Park has big plans: "Park to transition from Olympic 'site' to 'center'"

http://www.flyingaceproductions.com

The Utah Olympic Park has plans for increased development such as athlete housing and sports medicine facilities. The future development of the park is also
expected to be an economic boon to Summit County. (Photo courtesy of Melanie Welch)

Aaron Osowski, The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/park_city-...-has-big-plans

Since it first opened in 1992 as the Utah Winter Sports Park, the Utah Olympic Park (UOP) has attracted visitors, world-class athletes and, in 2002, the Olympic Games themselves. But the UOP has more in store for the future as part of an effort to broaden its focus.

"Our whole pitch on what the UOP is doing is to be a facility that not only trains high-performance athletes but, more importantly, is a community recreation center and serves a wider population," said Colin Hilton, president and CEO of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation

Featuring six Nordic ski jumps, a 1,335-meter sliding sports track, a 750,000-gallon summer freestyle and freeskiing training pool, among other facilities, the UOP is open year-round and is geared toward both athletes and residents. The UOP is also home to the Winter Sports School, a college prep school for those dedicated to training in winter sports.

Hilton said the park helps make the Park City area a destination resort community with a unique Olympic heritage, which is not something many towns can say. He envisions the future expansion of the UOP as tied in with a greater goal.

"Our goal is to take what we are as an official Olympic training site and transition that into an Olympic training center," Hilton said. "The 'site' to 'center' transition implies we're going to supply an enhanced level of services."

Those services will include sports medicine and sports science facilities, athlete housing, increased meeting space and more as part of the UOP's plan for the next 20 years.

Increasing the UOP's services ties into a statewide initiative of making Utah a national and international destination to train athletes during both the winter and summer, Hilton said.

The park has already drawn officials from Brazil and South Korea, for the 2016 Summer and 2018 Winter Olympic Games, respectively, who are looking to the UOP's vision as a model for their own facilities, Hilton said.

The proposed development at the UOP is projected by the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation to have significant economic benefits to the area as well. In a report, they list the following impacts:

•$5.4 million in new property-tax revenue over 20 years

•$1.9 million in new sales-tax revenue

•113 new jobs created up from 175 currently

•An increase in $1.1 million per year in UOP spending in Summit County

•Hosting major events

This new development at the park is, Hilton said, part of a plan to find revenue-generating ideas that allows it to be self-sustaining and a more suitable operation for a future Olympic venue.

Partnerships with organizations like Basin Recreation, with whom they have helped to create expanded Nordic trails in the area, are also important, Hilton added.

"Residents and visitors view the UOP as a vibrant part of our community," he said. "We want to continue to take the Olympics and Olympic movement and inspire visitors to hear the story of how we continue to train Olympic athletes."

For more information on the UOP and the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, visit utaholympiclegacy.com.
