Nice. I like The Monarch. It's really one of the better buildings we've gotten.

Its definitely an interesting building. I didn't ever really pay attention to how many antennae it had on it until after this shot was taken.

What?? haha Those are the tv and radio towers in West Austin. I admit though, it does look like they're on the roof of it. They sort of have a futuristic look there. Like something from Blade Runner.

Hard to see but it appears that they have started re-painting the Monarch. Only 6 floors so far on the south east side. Color appears to be same or similar. However, the east facing side corner is getting the same blue/gray hue treatment where it is currently, well, something else.

After all these years, I never noticed the attached garage. Shows how observant I am. I could miss a full moon on a clear night.

Yeah, a lot of our mid 2000s stucco buildings need a paint job pretty bad.

I was trying to figure out what was under construction behind Monarch - it's the Whole Foods expansion, in case anyone took a little bit longer, like me.

Could be worse. In a post further up, JAM didnt remember the antennas on top of the Monarch.

You know, I think Monarch is one of my favorite buildings downtown. The crown is super unique (for Texas) and it still has a really lovely presence in the skyline.

I'll never forget sneaking onto the top floor with my nana back in '09 or so and being totally stunned at the interiors of those penthouses. Great fuzzy memories

My primary gripe with the Monarch is that over half of their roof lighting is out. (I verified this while living at the Bowie - where I had a direct line-of-sight of the roof.) At least every other LED light bar is not working. It would look soooo much better if they fixed that. Of course, this is not the only complaint I have about DT crown lighting...

I agree, If they kept up with the lighting, the building would stand out more than it does. For awhile they even had changing patterns shifting different colors but it's been years since I've seen that. Definitely need to fix up their lights up there..

Oh noooo. I didn't realize! It's been a while since I've seen it lit at night. Ugh, I swear most of these HOAs just give up on lighting after year 5.

This one's a rental. But yeah, same thing.

Oh yes, of course. Wasn't Monarch supposed to be condo originally wayy back? I would totally buy there tbh.

Yes. I believed it switched to rental during construction because of market changes.

Lived in the Monarch during high school... it’ll always have a special place in my heart. It felt so hip and fun to be a teenager in a building like that. Would spend hours studying in their common space and drinking hot chocolate from their machine (the kid in me thought that was so neat). Common area is actually pretty expansive and at ground level near the creek, which makes it a little different than buildings of today with multi-level amenity floors. There’s have great interior design with red accents, cool wood flooring, stark white marble. The condo-style walls gave you a better build than some apartments, and they actually continually updated finishes, like adding new flooring options and kitchen updates. Bowie was great too, with the better pool rooftop and a little more glitzy, but something about the Monarch really feels uniquely Austin — like truly OG market district. UrbanSpace’s original offices and showroom were in the retail portion. And I think its butterfly crown is really cool — my favorite lighting is when they were experimenting with yellow/purple. Not sure about the outages, but I know a few years ago they were making a concerted effort to improve it. Guess that’s my little Monarch appreciation post... LOVE Austin’s growth but every now and then, I get a little nostalgic when I think about 2012-2014 and walking past fields to the violet crown. Pretty remarkable what’s changed in less than a decade.
