Should have been called Fort Douglass so that 187 years later, I wouldn't misspell it on a regular basis.

Article about planners needing to take responsibility for the damage done by Sandy, suggests they being given jail sentences, for their roles in the development of high risk coastal areas.......

planners don't drive these developments, market forces do. If anyone is to blame its those who desire to live in these areas. As sad a situation as it is in that entire area right now (my cousin had to leave manhattan and fly back to winnipeg for the next two months because she said you cannot live in New york right now.) you cannot pin the severity of the disaster on planners imo.

would love to hear your guys opinions, switching it up in the expresso thread!

Bullshit. Planners plan, people choose(largely, at this time) where they want to live.

Looks like city council is slowly ''fixing'' the wrongdoing of Katz, Sheegl, their flunkee Chief Reid and Shindico.

Not sure what Western Expresso is for exactly but figured its a catch all.

Just want to share a site I recently re-discovered. Highlighting all of Winnipeg's great murals.

I absolutely agree. What a great location, across form Wascana Park, walking distance to downtown and the University. I am sure Boardwalk (owners) have big plans for this land, although you don't think of them as developers. I can see this being redeveoped in phases with way more density. Lots of luxury condos with views of the park, with more modest condos and rentals behind.

Very much in agreement - I can't drive past there without shaking my head at the waste of space - it is almost an acreage like density of housing practically in the centre of the city. I assumed it was social housing but apparently boardwalk bought it in the last sale so there is a chance that someone will whip out a calculator and do some math on alternative use value.

what is prompting the question? Are there rumours that boardwalk is going to do something?

Anyone following Winnipeg's fire hall saga? If so there is a good read here:

http://blackrod.blogspot.ca/2012/11/...candal-by.html

If the article is correct it shows how dirty it really is at city hall and how clued out the politicians supposedly representing us really are.

It just makes me angry every time I go down Broad/Wascana Parkway. It's one of my favourite entrances into downtown, minus the passing of that.

Are you kidding me? Sure there are bad planners out there but they have almost ZERO power in determining where development goes. As a planning consultant everything and I mean EVERYTHING is decided by politicians. Planners are in essence, qualified advisers to the local mayor and council. Ocean front properties are a boon for communities because of the high assessments they can get for the properties...until a disaster strikes.

It seems like something the LFL would stage to try and drum up some controversy/media coverage.

Did the LFL hire the intoxicated hooligans before or during the game?

Attendance was poor from what I heard (~2500). I doubt they last another season up here.

An article that some may be interested in reading (I'm always interested in Toronto stuff) about companies moving back from Mississauga to downtown Toronto so that they can attract all the young professionals that now live downtown and don't want to commute.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle5176907/

It also touches on downtown residents getting rid of their cars, something I'm sure steveosnyder would love to read (although if people in downtown Toronto with their subways and density are just doing it now, I'm sure we're a long long ways away).
