I still don't see what your point is, I could care less what his connections to the shindlemans are, he paid market value for one of their properties, whats the issue with that?

Say what you want about other land deals, which are legitimate causes for concern, but you can't use this particular story.
Isn't it odd though that Nordman's tax bill came to Katz's house? Do you receive tax bills for houses you don't own?

This is the first time that I have been wowed by a free press commentator. This person actually took the time to look into all of the issues at hand. Before you roll your eyes, read the whole thing.

Quote:
So lets get this right.

Sam Katz and Sandy Shindleman own the Goldeyes.

But Sam says it's strictly a business relationship.

Shindico has landed numerous major tenders in Winnipeg, to the point that other real estate companies are complaining.

Now we have a land swap and fire hall built on private land, all orchestrated by the fire chief and shindico behind closed doors without prior public or council knowledge and approval?

Sam buys a million dollar house from the Shindleman's in Arizona recently.

So Sammy can afford a 1 million dollar house in Arizona? Must be doing quite well?

"When asked where he would get $1 million, Katz said he had been "blessed in business."

Regarding his most recent house purchase:

"Property records show George Bell lives next door to Katz's Windgate Ranch property. Arizona Corporation Commission reveal Bell is listed as a business partner in at least three companies with Winnipeg's chief administrative officer Phil Sheegl."

Phil Sheegle?

The CAO (awards property contracts among other things) for Winnipeg and Sam Katz best friend. How about that eh? No conflict of interest at all.

"Records show Sheegle owns a condo in a Scottsdale subdivision northwest of Windgate Ranch. Sheegl purchased the property in 2005 for $465,000, according to online property records."

So Phil Sheegle, Sandy Shindleman, Sam Katz and Goerge Bell ALL own property in and around Windgate Ranch in Arizona?

Hmmm…

"In March, Katz purchased a Scottsdale Arizona-based shell company called Duddy Enterprises from Sheegl. Both officials later said that move was a mistake, because they say said it could allow people to draw negative perceptions about the city."

Now why would Sam do the above mentioned? Why would he buy a company based in Arizona from Phil Sheegle for 1 dollar?

It's a well known fact that Phil Sheegle was seen sitting in Shindico's Winnipeg Jets season tickets seats last year at the MTS centre.

Why do they make the dots so easy to connect?

Pure greed.

I guess they're gearing up for when the shit hits the fan and they have to flee the country. Thunder Bay's last corrupt mayor is now a CAO for a county in Florida, and refers to his time as mayor of Thunder Bay as "the bad times". I can see Sam Katz referring to his tenure as "the bad times" too.

Good find Chris, thanks for posting.

The honourable thing for Katz to do would be to step down! But we all know that won't happen.

Here is another one. I think the FP is now intent on exposing every corrupt act he has or is in the process of committing. A good thing? Yes.

Whether everything he does is bad or not -such as dpenner insists is something we should try to see it as- is completely mute.

If your girlfriend cheats on you one time, what she says when you spot her with another man -whether lying or not- holds little merit, as your trust has already been previously broken. Similarly, when the Mayor is caught in an act that puts him between the taxpayers he is supposed to lead and represent, the trust is gone, and the eyes will forever be fixated on the negatives until he leaves office.

Katz's take on success raises ire

Ex-Crocus investor miffed about Fish

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz's comments about his business success have rekindled the ire of a prominent Crocus Investment Fund unitholder who wants to see the end of a dispute between the defunct fund and the Katz-owned Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball club.
On Thursday, Katz told reporters he could afford paying $1 million in cash for a home in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale in August because he's been successful over a 40-year career as the owner of nightclubs, travel agencies, comedy clubs and properties, among other businesses.
"I've been blessed and very fortunate in many of my business ventures," the mayor said. "You know what? If you work hard, wonderful things can happen."
Former Crocus investor Bernie Bellan, who launched a $200-million class-action lawsuit against the defunct fund, said Friday he found the mayor's comments provocative.
"It's disingenuous, to say the least. It raises the question of what has gone on with the Winnipeg Goldeyes," Bellan said.
In 2006, the receiver in charge of liquidating Crocus investments filed suit against the Goldeyes in an effort to recover $305,000 worth of interest on loans made to the club in 1999 and 2000. The receiver has since increased that claim to include principal as well as interest.
In 2007, the Goldeyes argued Crocus, in fact, made investments in the baseball club, as opposed to loans, and thus no money would be repaid until the team generates more profit. At the time, Katz said in an affidavit the team was not capable of repaying any interest and would not be capable of doing so until such time as the club has "a financially viable season."
In light of that claim, Bellan said he took interest in Katz's description of his financial success.
"The claim that the Goldeyes have never made a profit, I don't know how he can stick with that. If they don't make a profit, how much does he pay himself as the owner?"
Katz declined an interview request Friday. His spokeswoman, Rhea Yates, said the Goldeyes submitted a settlement offer last week but have yet to hear back from the Crocus receiver.
Lawyers for the receiver as well as the Goldeyes could not be reached for comment.
As a private business, the Goldeyes' financial picture is unknown. The club is routinely among one of the most robust in North American minor-league baseball and led the American Association in attendance in 2012...

Was it ever officially reported that Katz bought the house for $10, as BR claims?

The $10 means nothing. This is a figure used all the time to represent financial consideration in a deed to ensure it is binding. The actual amount paid woudl be a in a separate, private agreement.

The fire in St. Boniface is very large. You can see it from anywhere in the city.
