Am I reading the drawing wrong? It says the total height at 612' 10" to the top and 37 levels, not 513', granted the 37th is probably mechanical.

Am I reading this wrong...did they drop the residential tower component to this project? Is it now only one building on this site instead of two?

The residential tower will be built later.

Where? Over the new plaza located on the northwest corner?

It looks like the office tower will take up half the block (the entire eastern half). Leaving the old, protected, UT structure on the SW corner and a new plaza on the NW corner.

The UT structure is not protected. The requirement is that only the facade needs to be maintained and incorporated in any new structure.

From what I understood, the building will be built above the current CTJ building facade, but CTJ itself will be gutted for ground retail. I'm not completely sure if the building will take up the half-block or just the CTJ portion, but the plaza will be demolished. The renderings of the building were described as "really cool", take whatever you will from that.

The building will open up to a park which will be built on the northwestern portion of the block. The parking garage that is currently there will be demolished. Eventually, a residential high-rise with ground retail is planned for the northeastern portion. They want to start within the next 5-6 months.

So basically a 35-story office tower, a park, and a residential high-rise of unknown height.
.

I was fuzzy on that, too, so I had to go find Austinite101's post, but it seems they changed their plan a bit.

If this huge building is being built along the entire southern edge of the block, then the residential building on the northeast portion of the block will have no southern views unless it goes very tall. I hope that means a very tall slender building.

The office tower is being built on the eastern half of the block:

Here are the north/south elevations. The residential tower will be going up in the SW corner of the lot where the Claudia Johnson building is. Having that facade being the entrance to the residential tower will be pretty cool. But it is very telling that Trammell Crow is delaying the start of the residential tower.

That clears everything up and makes a lot more sense! Thanks! I'm not too concerned about them delaying the residential portion. I think we'll eventually see something tall there.

From the AULCC (emphasis mine):

Quote:
The Block 71 project will be developed on approximately 76,174 square feet (1.7487 acres) located at the property bound by Lavaca Street, Colorado Street, 6th Street and 7th Street in Austin, Travis County, Texas. The development will consist of high rise buildings with 236-unit apartment building, 665,000 square foot office building, and two (2) restaurants with on-site parking garage and utilities.
No mention of retail other than the restaurants, but they definitely refer to two highrise buildings.

The only thing that keeps this from being a smaller version of the Bank of America NYC tower is the lack of a spire.

I like this one a lot, even though it's smaller than I'd like. It's a nice riff on the standard blocky tower that we tend to get. Will be very interested to see what the residential tower looks like in the end, how it complements the office tower design.

TOWERS has an article on this now. I'm posting this because they have an old photo showing the block before the UT System HQ was built, which was built in 1975.

Were you referring to this project, or is this just a coincidence? Here's a Duda Paine project in Dallas - Victory Park Center - that looks remarkably similar to the Block 71 elevations:
