Greektowns unbuilt column
Article from ChiArchBlog

I'm gonna be surprised if this one happens. They've had approval for 3 yrs in the best market the west loop has ever had.

Short interview on the proposed tower for 1326 South Michigan Ave by SBC. I don't recall seeing this rendering before.

Just based on fuzzy memories, this boom feels less "boomy". During the last boom, streeterville, lakeshore east, river north and the south loop were all under heavy development. You also had Trump, Aqua, Legacy at MP, 300 N LaSalle, BCBS extension, 1MP that were making the whole city feel taller. Not to mention the Spire and Waterview under construction. All of these are in the top 20 tallest in the city.

Family would come visit and ask "when are they going to be finished building the city?" as cranes were just everywhere you looked.

The development now seems a little more spread out with more in the neighborhoods. Overall, this is probably more sustainable but last decade was exciting.

^ I'm really enjoying all the proposals with the 'stilts' supporting sections of the building.

Oh, yes you did! Hell yeah.

LOVE IT.

And just when I was about to ask, "what is it that VDT is working on in town at the moment?".

I've made the point before, but keep in mind that 2015 is more akin to 2004 or so, than 2007 or 2008 in terms of the cyclical stage. When making that adjustment (and projecting forward the huge volume of projects that seem poised to start construction over the 2016-2017 period, we're doing just fine in comparison. May still of course end in a very spectacular bust, but if it does, won't be for at least a few years still, and maybe as much as a handful. (this is clearly a longer cycle than the last, and who knows? - maybe the last several)....

Thanks for all the info.

Not what I expected from LVDA in their first apparently 'real' downtown high-rise project since the DeStefano disintegration.......to say the least. Just a weird choice.

Seems that LVDA and SMDP, the DeStefano legacy shops, just can't get some momentum going yet this cycle.......both seem to have enough talent, for sure.....

Also like that this proposal seems to nod a little at the grid and truss design of Larry Booth's 1970s design for the MCA that still occupies the site.

re: proposed wells st hotel

I'm kind of torn by my reflexive crankiness at NIMBYism and my intense dislike for the massing and design.

I actually don't disagree with the NIMBYs on this one, but I think to the other point that the developer could do this right and preserve the feel. That is entirely possible...but they might have to scale down the hotel to half size to do that.

Agreed, that massing and design is damn mess. I assume the situation will ultimately result in a typical bait-and-switch style Chicago compromise. Even at nine or ten stories it will be a significant development for the area. If "charm" is so important maybe the locals can landmark the area...

^I don't think there are enough contiguous buildings of architectural merit to create a landmark district as there are in places like Wicker Park, Armitage-Halsted, or Fulton Market

Actually as I skim down Wells street on Google Streetview, it occurs to me that it is already a whole jumble of things. The only thing consistent, with some exceptions is the fine grain scale of the buildings. If that's what people want to maintain, that would require planning guidelines for materiality, scale, and glazing to solid ratios, which is not really something that Chicago zoning deals with outside of landmark districts.
