Make no wonder we are the most obese province with all these restaurants ! Competition is going to be stiff for the “eating out” dollar

I don't think blaming Newfoundland's obesity problem on the number of restaurants here is the answer. Our obesity problems goes way back before we ever had the large choice and number of restaurants here. Its ingrained in our culture and education is the only way to combat it to change people's attitudes toward obesity.

That's like saying our drunk driving problems here are because of the increase in the number of cars we have today. It's not.

I am kinda skeptical now whether it will succeed wherever it opens.

Opinions?
Went to the Keg last night in the old Legros location. Terrible service, I was told that half the staff there was fired last week including the head chef due to "senior" management decisions.

Seemed strange to me.

Seems like sushi joints have found their place in St. John's.
Now, if only sushi didn't gross me out.

Perhaps Horsell was writing with a touch of jest. In any case, only the most well-off among us could afford obesity-by-downtown-restaurant-scene. One local steakhouse's advertised prices rival the best steakhouses of Chicago! Granted, the cattle do have to swim across the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, and many sadly drown.

So do we know what is coming into the old Keg location? Glad it's not a Kelsey's.

I posted that a few days ago. Should be a good location for them. They have that new strip mall being built on the same lot. Hopefully something good will occupy those retail spaces.

Heard thru the rumourmill that the owner of the building (Rob Moore) is gonna open another unknown restaurant there and not a famous franchise one.

Also heard that Starbucks will be leaving Atlantic Place and moving into 351 Water.

I noticed they have tables and chairs on the rear balcony at 351. Not sure if Starbucks are going in that space or not tho.

New Mexican late night spot operating out of the Sprout called "Poyo". Haven't been myself, but reviews seem favourable.

Hey guys, I've been a long time reader, and now I'm a first time poster! I've got a friend who works at the downtown Starbucks and I just texted her about the move to 351 rumor, and she confirmed it! Not only will Starbucks be leaving Atlantic Place, but the new store in 351 will be getting a Clover coffee brewer too

Plus I've seen job postings for staff positions for Starbucks for 351 Water Street too.

Do you have confirmation on that? Or is it just rumour?
I've heard about Bier Markt too but only as a rumour.

That last rumour I heard though was that it wasn't gonna be one of those popular franchises but yet another brand new unknown restaurant created just for that space.

I wish we could get some definite answers somewhere though.

Here's a question now, being that there are so many new franchised restaurants opening soon. Do you guys feel we gave reached the saturation point with all of these new franchises in St. John's or is there still room for others?

Not sure when you say 'local' you're talking about locally owned restaurants, but the prices at the Keg here in SJ are not different than other Kegs I've been to in other parts of Canada. At least not that I could notice....
