Welcome mrjanejacobs! I feel the same way as you do. At first, I was excited about the possibility of CBS creating a downtown area and increasing density around a central region, but after hearing about the changes they want to make, it seems pretty pointless. Flowers, a town clock and benches might make one stretch of road look nicer than before, but it does absolutely nothing that should involve the term "downtown."

I hope one day CBS does increase density, both commercial and residential, and does get a proper downtown, but I agree: this does not sound like it!

Thanks folks - I am actually not in CBS. I grew up in CBS/St.John's but am currently based in Montreal/Brussels.

Check this video out though:
http://www.ted.com/talks/james_howar..._suburbia.html

It's a great TEDtalk on 'dissecting suburbia'. He has about the same amount of aggression toward the suburbs as I do.

I was considering posting it on the CBS Main Street facebook page, but I suspected it would be a little offensive to some suburban dwellers... haha.

I particularly appreciate how he makes fun of "planters" as a sloppy 'nature band-aid' that suburban towns use to compensate for bad urbanism and planning. haha very true and appropriate in light of the Mayor of CBS vision for the redevelopment.

Way to go. Now you've ruined planters for me

Haha - that wasn't my intention. Planters are still definitely better than asphalt! But they are definitely not ground-shaking urbanism! (they hardly qualify as an intervention) ha

It's a fantastic book. I can recommend a handful of others by her! She was a phenomenal woman! A huge inspiration for any aspiring urbanist!

Wait - you have forum meetings...? haha

We do! Next time you're in town, if you're interested, we'll have one in your honour. So far it's just Copes, Ayeronaut, jeddy1989, and I that go.

That's hilarious - how do you organize yourselves? I am usually in town 1-2 times per year. Sometimes for a month (I usually get pretty anxious anyway and look for somethign to preoccupy myself).

From what I can tell they meet up at one pub, drink beer, move to another pub, drink more beer, and repeat until happy

Sums it up well. Except, every time, without fail, for one reason or another I am obligated to drive my car and must drink casually and responsibly in order to avoid arrest.

Be it a Saturday morning meeting called last minute, or the need to pick someone up in Paradise at 1:30am, I get screwed every time.

One of these days though, I will force the three of you to carry me up Kenmount Road because I am too biligerent to walk myself, and we have no cab money due to mass consumption. And then we will be so much closer.

Vote Tonight on Sandman Hotel

Quote:
St. John's City Council will be voting tonight on whether Kenmount Road will be home to another hotel. Northwood Properties wants to build a 6-storey, 24-metre high Sandman Hotel next to Tim Hortons, near the Team Gushue Highway. But before the developer gets the green light, council has to make some site-specific amendments to accommodate the height of the hotel. The hotel would have 200 rooms, two restaurants, meeting and banquet rooms and one free-standing restaurant.

City Councillor Tom Hann says Council has adopted the proposed development in principle, and has gotten approval for the necessary amendments from Municipal Affairs. But there's still work to be done.

Sandman hotels boasts 40 locations across the country, and if approved it will be the first in this province.

This is a fairly big development. If it gets the green light do you think it'll warrant its own project thread? What are people's thoughts?
