Museum: BMW Welt and BMW Museum
Location: Munich, Germany
Architect: COOP HIMMELB(L)AU (BMW Welt), Karl Schwanzer (BMW Museum), expansion Atelier Brückner
Completed: 2007 (BMW Welt), 1973 (BMW Museum) expansion 2008

The Ultimate Driving Machine or The Ultimate Marketing Machine? BMW Welt is where you go to pick-up your Bimmer if you chose European delivery. But it's more than just a delivery hall, with exhibits, restaurants and a huge selection of BMW brands on display. BMW Welt is Bavaria's most popular attraction (it's free) beating out icons like Schloss Neuschwanstein. BMW Museum charges a fee and has a visitation of 600,000 annually.

I got the impression the 2008 expansion greatly enhanced it. Previously it may have been just the bowl-shaped building but now there is quite a bit below it.

Eventually I'd like to get to all the German automakers museums:

Museum: Zeppelin Museum
Location: Friedrichshafen, Germany
Architect: Karl Hagenmayer (Harbour Railway Station), Jauss+Gaupp (Museum)
Completed: 1933 (Harbour Railway Station), 1996 (expansion to Zeppelin Museum)

Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance is the home of the Zeppelin Foundation, the company created to build transmissions for the airships built there. If you've ever had a car with a ZF transmission, this is where it was born. Friedrichshafen has financial control of the Zeppelin Foundation, so profits are put back into the city. The museum occupies the former Harbour Railway Station and an expansion houses its most impressive exhibit, a lifesize recreation of a portion of the airship Hindenburg.

I wonder if the Hindenburg ever had its own fancy station built at its airfield, perhaps in a similar style to this re-purposed railway station?

I believe they were much simpler affairs usually consisting of just a large hangar. The only surviving one is in Rio De Janeiro at Bartolomeu de Gusmão Airport, built for the Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin:

Just for fun, a time-lapse video of the new wing of the museum under construction:

Not my photos. A couple of recent webcam shots of the new Steven Holl-designed Kinder Building of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Part of the largest current cultural project in North America, due to open November1, 2020. I'm excited about this project.

Part of what makes downtown so vital here is the clash between architectural styles. I'm actually rather happy that when building the addition on to the museum, they went out of their way to choose a style that clashed as hard as it possibly could with the old library building. I tried to find a photo that captures it, but really couldn't... It's quite a sight at night when the light is shining through all those little holes in the new facade. The new building replaced a smaller addition that had been added on in the 1990's. It tripled the museum's exhibition space, and they also added a rooftop sculpture garden.
