Probably another pie in the sky deal like we've seen multiple times with a few developers around here.
I've given up hope on this project and it's mostly due to JMJ. I base this comment solely on my personal, no industry experience observation - but it doesn't look like they really know what they are doing with this project. These are also the same people who proposed building a Hard Rock hotel downtown a year or two ago and we've seen nothing from that as well.

It's disappointing. I was hoping this project would happen. I know I'm in the minority but I didn't hate the two tower proposal (I didn't love it either), I did really like the original rendering though. Oh well, here's hoping something even better will come along.

The good news is the view of the Tower Life Building will remain longer.

Did the developer ever purchase the property?

I guess that was a Mike drop question. My original post on this thread was blocked ostensibly because I questioned the integrity of the developers, and their relationship to the current President. I stand by my original post, but hope that I am wrong.

There was some demo done on the existing building a year or two ago. Not sure if that implies they own it or not though.

I found a couple recent articles regarding JMJ Development up in Dallas. They are facing foreclosure on one development and a forced bankruptcy on another.

I have never believed that this development would move forward. The fact that this has dragged on forever, mostly have gotten shoddy renderings and dicey information from them... this project might as well be called dead at this point. SA deserves better developers than this.

Why?

i.e., why does San Antonio deserve better (but some other cities don't)?

I don’t mean to speak for that poster but I doubt he’s speaking for every city, just San Antonio. I think you’re reading too deeply into a very simple statement.

It's official. It's done.

Last year, the San Antonio Housing Authority board of commissioners voted to pursue a partnership with JMJ of Dallas on twin, 24-story apartment towers kitty-corner to the Tower Life Building, but that mega project fizzled.

We just need the "serious' investors here in SA!!!!

I agree. There was absolutely nothing special about the design, it had nothing meaningful to offer at the street level, and it drastically interfered with a great view of the Tower Life building. Good riddance.

That's a shame, but really, while these weren't bad designs, I didn't feel that they justified losing that view of the Tower Life Building. That always bugged me.

I don't mean to necro a dead thread, but I happen to work near the proposed site, which as it stands is a lot fenced-off with a JMJ sign. I was curious, so I checked their site, and the project is still listed. More than that, a construction company has already been named (B&A I think?). I can't find anything else which states the project was cancelled other than a lone SA Heron article which just describes the project as "fizzled out". The most recent articles on this date last year and speak as if it's still happening, so I'm wondering if the project is in fact dead, or if it is instead just in hibernation on account of Covid. It seems many construction projects took a delay on account of the virus.

Any chance anybody has any insights?

Unfortunately I can't find the article for the life of me, but... I remember reading somewhere that this project was indeed dead but thankfully the investment was funneled instead to Weston's projects (the 32 story residential building and Riverplace).
