Hong Kong Red Cross Headquarters Redevelopment Project Public Fundraising Kick-off Ceremony
Turning a new page for the Humanitarian Platform
Press Release

(Hong Kong, 8 May 2011) The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has been serving the Hong Kong community for over sixty years. For the further development of humanitarian work, the HKRC is now planning to redevelop its Headquarters building which will be re-located to the West Kowloon Reclamation area. The project is planned to complete by 2014 and the construction cost is close to HK$400 million. The redevelopment plan will also mark as the future vision of the HKRC.

In order to appeal for community support and engage the general public, the “Hong Kong Red Cross Headquarters Redevelopment Project Public Fundraising Kick-off Ceremony” was held today (8 May 2011) with the announcement of a series of promotional and public fundraising programmes. The proceeds will be allocated to the redevelopment project for the setting up of a broader humanitarian platform in serving more people in need.

“It has been the dream of many generations of Red Cross people to stretch out our humanitarian platform. I wish everyone could support this meaningful project, and work together to build a broader humanitarian platform.” said Lady Wu, JP, HKRC’s Director & Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee for the project.

The existing HKRC headquarters building at Harcourt Road has been using for 45 years. In order to match Government’s land use planning, and to accommodate rapid expansion of HKRC services in recent years, the new headquarters would be re-located to Hoi Ting Road of the West Kowloon Reclamation area. The 11-storey new building will put different service units under one roof, including a blood collection centre, a first aid & health training centre, a Red Cross Youth uniformed group regional centre, a volunteer development and activities centre, an humanitarian education centre, and handling centres for overseas and local disaster relief materials, as well as a resource centre for the future Health Emergency Response Unit.

Immediately after the kick-off ceremony, the first fundraising programme – Charity Books Sale, was launched. The two sets of charity books comprise three English learning books 《品味英語》written by The Hon Sir TL Yang, GBM, JP, Chairman of HKRC, and “BO BO HO” 《煲煲好》written by Mrs Dominica Yang, Sir TL’s daughter-in-law. Both authors have so kindly designated HKRC as the beneficiary of all sales income from their newly-published books. Both of them also attended the ceremony and autographed their books for donors.

Other fundraising initiatives include the “Warmhearted Chairs” and “Tree of Humanity” donation campaigns, “Celebration with Love” Greeting Card Donation, Charity Family Carnival, etc. To learn more about these programmes, please pay close attention to the HKRC New Headquarters Redevelopment website: www.redcross.org.hk/web/newheadquarters
