When the Human Rights is builts as proposed will we spur a new breed of architecture in our city. Like the picture below It will be interesting to see the range of feedback.

And what Canadian city skyline supports these morbid examples of architecture?

The HRM would definitely provide local citizens and developers (people with money) something to draw inspiration from.

Will the HMR spur a new era of architecture for Winnipeg? I would say yes (optimist). As a realist, I'd would say Winnipeg is growing it's inventory of architecturally distinct structures; Esplanade Riel (Provencher Pedestrian Bridge), Human Rights Museum, and yes, even the proposed ugly condo (glass atrium) on Assiniboine are all outstanding concepts.

Once completed, the Human Rights Museum will shift the traditional view of Winnipeg (and all of Canada), both in a physical design perspective, but also psychologically...people will begin to associate Winnipeg with great moral value and creativity.

I am uncertain if Winnipeggers hold a similar uplifting view of the possibilities, but from one prairie province to another, things are looking up

I'd like to say that the CMHR will set the architectural bar pretty high, but we all know that this city is the birthplace of pink stucco and faux fieldstone.

I doubt it. The CMHR will probably be scaled down due to rising costs.

Sigh, yeah, I would agree unfortunately. What grand project in this city doesn't get scaled down to shit?

i dont think that CMHR will necesarily cause buildings to look like those shown above, but i do hope that is at least elevates the culture of design in the city.....if it brings awareness to unique design and quality materials and detailing, then possibly other developers will begin to see the value in that....currently they do not.

if it is successful, as saskftw points out, winnipeg will become known for this building and that excitement might elevate the quality of development.

as it is, i think with hydro, the library, red river college, the college for the environment , and maybe if we are lucky, one other building that i cant tell you about....the quality of our buildings is begining to improve...too bad we missed the boat on MTS centre, from the outside at least.

after the guggenheim was built the architectural quality in bilbao improved dramatically.....they even had norman foster design their subway stops.

I think it will produce winds of change. It's not so much that Winnipeg doesn't change, but that it changes very slowly. For example, it was just today that the Free Press featured many articles in its main section regarding transportation in the city of Winnipeg. Out on the streets today, people are talking about it. Assuming that the CMHR generates excitement (which I can't for the life of me think of one reason it won't), then it is sure to get people talking. If nothing else, it will open some eyes and get people thinking about new, modern design, which will hopefully be seen in future projects.

A crowd attracts a crowd but unfortunately we live in a blue-collar city. That doesn't mean that we can't have the best , it just means that the economics don't work in our favour.

The CMHR is , as far as I can tell, meant to be a showpiece. In that I think it will be successful. Whether that translates into other examples of divinely inspired architecture is anybody's guess. Personally I'd have to agree that it certainly sets the bar higher. I just don't know if anybody building anything in this city cares where the bar is set in the first place.

I only have two words to describe those wonders:

Avant Garde.

HMR will definitely be in that class for sure.

Keep Thinking Big

Some forumers are making it sound like this type of architecture and construction should not or does not get built in prairie cities. The new Edmonton / Alberta Art Gallery thats under construction at this time shares these similar architecture and construction concepts with the new Winnipeg MHR. I think these types of buildings will add some real world class flavour to both cities.
