Sweet Spots!

What are some of the "sweet spots" in your city that you think would be perfect for a supertall? For the time being an entire city can't be supertalls, so where would you put your city's next one? A place that comes to my mind immediately is Wolf Point in Chicago. The spot there would really show off a building well. Please show a photo if you have one to demonstrate why you think it would be a sweet spot for a supertall.

-Thanks to rjseg1 for the photo. And although I don't agree with the building that was originally planned for the spot, the photo does illustrate how amazing of a location it would really be. Wolf Point = Parking lot, right side of screen.

Yeah - Wolf Point has some prime views up the river canyon - similar to those of Riverbend, which it would block if ever developed.

Very true, all of that area seems to be an untapped beauty spot. Look at a 2008 shot from Riverbend looking at the loop, with Wolf Point in the bottom left of the photo (parking lot).

I would say this is our biggest sweet spot here in Halifax/Dartmouth. Its an old industrial site on the waterfront. And we are fortunate enough that it is being developed with some awesome buildings.

by me

This is an overview of the site.

from kingswharf.ca

And this the main building being built right on the tip of the site.

I was downtown yesterday and walked past another plot of ground that I think would be a perfect location for a new supertall in Chicago if the economy ever decides when we can start building again. It's right off a blue line stop, and only a few blocks from the Sears tower. If the building were over 1200' it would be viewable from almost any point in the city, and would be a huge contribution to the skyline, filling in some of the gap towards the near south side of the city. This particular plot of ground I don't think anyone would really miss because it's not well kept. The southern half of the field looks like a spot where people launch boats, but again it all looks pretty bad. It's got a little open green for some sport activity but to be honest it's not the best looking field to play on, not to mention it's not level. It's right on a river which shows off any building really well. Here's some photos of the spot.

I'm all for nice parks.. I'm just saying that would be a great spot for a new supertall.

i dont recall a suburban development ever really being proposed there. there were a number of urban designs that have popped up for that spot over the past 10 years though:

source: photobucket.com

This was refered to as Franklin Pointe. There was another proposal called LaSalle Park i believe, but i havent been able to find drawings for it.

A lot of us Calgary forumers have been itching for a supertall (our new tallest U/C the Foster designed 'Bow' only reaches 774'). There is one parking lot almost smack dab in the middle of our CBD, and can go over the 1000' height without violating the shadowing restrictions for our river pathway to the north, here is the site:

I believe the site is currently owned by Imperial Oil, and perhaps at some point they will out-do EnCana and their new tallest by going higher in this spot.

Ive always wondered why there is this parking lot in the middle of the skyline district in Houston. Within like 3 blocks there is a 989ft tower, a 1001ft tower then a couple that are around 800ft tall. It would seem like the perfect place for a supertall or at least a tower around 750ft but Im afraid the day of supertalls in Houston is over. Its the last parking lot left in that general vacinity and Ive never even seen any proposals for that site which is strange.
