The Embassy Suites is hideous, but it's a crappy parcel and transitional use so whatever.

The dual branded hotel looks much better, ties into the surroundings, and should sit slightly taller than the buildings that make up the core of AS.

Having a few hundred people staying in the area each night ought to sustain a much more vibrant feel and help restaurants stay open--that's the biggest plus imo.

There is still the hole on the other side of the Atlantic and Atlantic Yards.

Actually its a prime corner site at a busy intersection and the transitional use is likely to last 30 or more years-- Settling for any development over quality is not positive-- Having said that, the hotel is not great at all (read bad), but not 'hideous' IMO. There are worse--

It’s fine to me, better than what is currently there and blends well with 12 across the street. Forgettable design but will bring more people to the area which is the main thing.

I guess you could read it as an upgrade over the other limited service hotels that have been built in ATL in recent years in the sense that the parking podium is below grade, but a downgrade in that it lacks anything like the height/density of those developments.

The rendering is bad which makes the hotel seem uglier than a nice rendering would, but we're likely to see the cheapest materials possible on this thing.

The intersection is "busy" in the sense that it gets a ton of car traffic, mainly people exiting the AC parking garage and through traffic on 17th. There are a handful of pedestrians too. But point taken: something more attractive and something to activate the corner more for pedestrians would be nice.

Nothing to disagree with there--

Midtown DRC Agenda includes another SCAD tower:

NEW APPLICATION: SCAD Mixed Use – 1470 Spring St.
New 20-story mixed-use project with 195 residential units (including 973 beds) with a dining hall and food market with a ~33,000 s.f. (700 seat) auditorium, ~35,000 s.f. academic space and ~5,500 s.f. campus retail store. The site is located on the west side of Spring St. with the Buford-Spring connector roadway to the north. A rooftop amenity space with pool is provided at the rooftop of the building while an at-grade open air courtyard is bordered on the three sides by the ‘U’ shaped building. An 8-story connected parking deck (with 232 parking spaces) is provided in the southern portion of the site and is accessible from two proposed points along Spring St. The southernmost point of access is a driveway along the full southern property line that gives access to both parking and loading.

Nice, great addition for SCAD.

Cranes and Construction: Anthem, new Anthem, Norfolk-Southern, hotel next to Fox Theater

And a random pic of what I wish we would see again in Atlanta, and also my favorite lobby.

Looks like they're committed to making it look like a campus now.

That looks really great! And adding nearly 1000 people on this parcel will do wonders for foot traffic in the area.

It will be placed to the right of their recently opened dorms fronting the Connector. It will replace the old "Spring House" dorms that were in the old motel along Spring Street.

Midtown Atlanta
@MidtownATL
Today we celebrated the groundbreaking of Winship at Midtown, a state-of-the-art cancer care center aligned with research and education. The 17-story tower is a unique partnership between Emory University and Emory Healthcare. A great day for #MidtownATL!
