A few of my friends live so close to Ostankino tower that it would crush them if it fell, but, despite the ugliness of a close up shot, the thing looks cool from other parts of Moscow because it is so massive. Also, its night time lighting looks is colorful and it makes you think that the aliens have arrived

I think this category has a sovereign winner, which is the Rungyeong Hotel:

None of those buildings are ugly. In fact I think most of them are really cool especially the Russian tower and Rungyeong Hotel I really would like to see that one. They may not be your favorite aesthetic, but I wouldn't call any of them ugly just eccentric.

Here's whats ugly.

What's truly ugly is the architecture of Wal-Marts and big box stores that just go as cheap as possible and put no thought into the architecture.

IMO, the Ryugyong Tower isn't ugly at all. It is overbearing and may not have the definitions of a well designed building, or be aesthetically appealing to the masses but it's an icon. It's existence is almost surreal, like something out of a futuristic Sci-Fi alternate universe. Quite possibly one of the most mysterious and fascinating buildings in the world.

Dang, it is actually looking pretty nice now. I could see this as a hotel in Las Vegas. In fact, that's the only application I can imagine it as.

I think for the most part you guys have good taste in bad taste. In other words I agree that most of the buildings posted so far have been of very dubious quality however it's too bad politics has tainted so many people's ideas of Ryugyong. Many people really can't seem to discern the difference. It's like they look at Ryguyong and all they see if Kim Jong Il! I have maintained for a while that it is one of the most spectacular buildings in the world. Were it built in the US i'm sure it would almost be universally praised.

I don't get it.

You criticize Wal-Mart and other big box stores while showing the back of a shipping warehouse. Where I live we have a number of big box stores and while I don't expect any of them to win any architectural awards, none of them come to mind as particularly ugly either.

It's strange, one day I was walking through Kwun Tong (Kowloon) in Hong Kong and I thought I ended up in Eastern Europe. How's this for brutal?

Riverside Plaza isn't the Crack Stacks. The Crack Stacks are the three high rises along Franklin in Seward. Supposedly they've chilled out since the Somalis moved in.

I love these 'ugliest building' threads because they're always filled with amazing looking buildings. Some are ugly, but almost all of them are interesting.

I totally agree! Concrete brutalism is fascinating and actually an architectural statement of its era. The Grand Lisboa is just a tasteless, and gaudy piece of crap. Apart from the historic centre, Macau is generally a very ugly city.
