i dont understand why people get so mad at the architects who design tis crap, im personally more frustrated at the idiots who select it as the final design.

It is actually an interesting read. I'm not a fan of some of the exterior design elements, but the interior looks fantastic. And the original cost estimates look like they took nothing into account. Realistically 200-400 Pounds for this isn't terrible when you consider size, construction, design, etc. The initial estimates are what was way off.
Yes, having been inside it, I agree, the internal spaces are great - it's an easy building to move around in, and the 'corridors' are very wide, and can double up as public spaces for gatherings, speeches etc., in contrast to more traditional buildings, with narrow corridors and stuffy committee rooms.

The outside doesn't always photograph very well, but it does sort of blend in with the hills behind it when you look down on it from a distance, and from close up it is mostly tucked away discretely behind a row of older buildings.

A lot of these projects are due to pompous, stick-up-the-ass architects who think they're going to reinvent the definition of beauty through sheer force of stupidity.

no, but it would be nice if "something new" didn't always translate to tacky and overdone.

I'm not sure if this building qualifies as ugly, but it is unintionally menacing. It also inspired Orwell's '1984.'

holy fudge, that scottish parliament building is hideous. it makes the retarded portland building (love those giant bows!!) look like the eiffel tower. on the other hand, i kind of like the ostankino tower. its oppressive and evil looking. kind a modern barad-dur from lord of the rings.

Here was a good article that is a little bit older from the Boston Globe called "In Praise of Ugly Buildings". It's archived now, but you can read it if you are a subscriber or know how to access it otherwise.

Hud hq

From David Brooks’ op-ed piece in the NY Times today about HUD, regarding its HQ in Washington:

“It is headquartered in a dispiriting 1960s building that is brutalist on the outside and dreary within- 10 stories of basement, as the employees say.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_...deral_Building

I don’t think it’s so bad, but the interiors of the brutalist buildings I’ve been in….yeah, I wouldn’t want to work there either. Funny line...

This complex should easily be in the running. It's the Riverside Plazza in Minneapolis, just east of downtown. It's home to a huge Somali immigrant population and sometimes referred to as the "Crack Stacks" or "Ghetto in the Sky." It’s especially ugly because of the stark contrast between this complex and the otherwise beautiful Minneapolis skyline.
