Bowman has announced he won't be seeking re-election. Still two years left so plenty of headway for any of you folks wanting to mount a mayorship campaign.

That'd be awesome for Main St.

Regarding Mayor, I wonder if anyone of substance will step up. Been a pretty depressing crop of candidates over the last while.

Maybe TrueViking will enter the race, he'll get our votes!

Can't think of one current city councilor who would make a good mayor!

Makes sense for Bowman to peace out now that he'll have two terms under his belt and the difficulty level is about to jump by a factor of 10.

The last few mayoral elections have been downright depressing. I don't think I've actually voted for someone I liked since Dan Vandal ran and lost to Katz... ever since then it's just been an exercise in figuring out who the least-worst candidate is, and voting for them.

Matt Allard as Mayor I'm wary of. He'd wanna waste more taxpayer funds for more bike paths.

And I hope we've seen the last of Judy Wasa wasa wasa wash leish.

Didn't know anything about him until you mentioned his name here. His facebook page seems to show he's in favour of infill and densification for the city (good), pro-environmentalism (really good) and free bus fare for kids (good if you have kids I guess??).

Interested in hearing more from him.

Allard is a "progressive". Not sure he'd try and defund or significantly reduce Police budget.

Klein had a town hall about 2 yrs. ago at Polo , has the support of Police and supports them.

I don't think anybody is actually trying to defund the police. Any sane, non dramatic people.

What should be happening is keeping costs of the Police, Fire and every other public entity under control. However, in recent time, the Police budgets have gotten out of control because of the union. Fire to a lesser extent, but still a high cost. Those are just the facts.

I hope he runs, he would have my vote. At the very least I hope/think he'll run if Browaty or Jenny try to run – purely on the defensive. Lol.

Over 47% of the city's budget for both WPS and WFPS. This will have to be addressed sooner or later. Bowman tried on this but failed. No wonder he's making an exit. It's a politician's nightmare.

Good luck to the new mayor.

Something like those Oslo buildings along main would be excellent. Even something in that realm of possibility would be transformative for that stretch.

I like the idea of reining in spending on police and fire services... salaries and pensions are sky high and something needs to happen before Winnipeg residents are all forced to take second jobs to pay the tax bill.

But defunding the police? No way. This city would be like a Mad Max movie if you eliminated or halved the police force.

Klein will almost certainly run.

He's been positioning himself as the anti-Bowman since basically the last election was over. He constantly posts criticizing City Hall and the leadership. His social media has a campaign vibe to it, he even tags everything with a campaign slogan "#forabetterwinnipeg"

Bowman not seeking a third term throws a wrench in that, though I guess he has plenty of time to come up with something original now.

It all seems pretty ham fisted but I guess this is local politics we're talking about so we shouldn't expect much ha.

Here's hoping Matt Allard throws in his hat. He's the most outspokenly pro-densification, pro-active transportation, pro-urbanist councillor by a wide margin. For instance, he supports local groups like YIMBY Winnipeg and champions initiatives like the recent change to incorporate induced demand effects in the calculus for all future infrastructure projects.
