I don't know what it is, but exposed columns elevate a design so, so much.

I'm digging the monolithic shape. A great addition to a great city.

^I think that last photo is the first I've noticed that the tower on this building isn't perfectly square. The east slab is at a slight angle to the west slab.

I wonder if they are awaiting Trump-style backlash for the LOEWS sign they are about to put up there, if they do

I think most people think of the TRUMP sign as uniquely hideous whether they realize it or not. The reason: It utilized a clumsy/clunky serif font with brain-dead kerning, and it sits a lot closer to the pedestrian than any other sign along the river.

If TRUMP was instead a thin, sans-serif that guided left, even with the same height and positioned on the same floor, I think there would be little objection.

^^ Is it a definite that they are putting up the? Know it appeared in renderings (as did - earlier - a Star Trek insignia), but not all that appears in renderings is realized of course....

I don't know if the architects would have provided the giant framed rectangle if there was a chance the sign wasn't going to happen.

I'm pretty sure that's a ballroom or some other form of common area not a holding spot where a huge sign is going to go.

EDIT. I was wrong, they are putting a big sign up there. Wow, yeah, very big.

^They've already stubbed-out the supports for the sign. You can actually make out the faint letters.

I highly doubt any normal person hates the sign because of its serif font. I could see them disliking it because it sits lower than most signs, but mainly because it says Trump. And most Chicagoans are so obnoxiously liberal they'll complain about the man putting a sign anywhere on HIS building. Though, if we're being completely honest I bet 90% of pedestrians walking past it think little of it.

I would still hate the sign even if it said Obama or Soros, or whatever you think we "liberals" like. I hate the sign because it is big, it is gaudy, and it is located at 1 of the most scenic spots in the city. It taints the view of wrigley and tribune towers from michigan ave bridge. And yes the old sun times building was ugly also, but since it was torn down i think we should have progressed from that.

Well that certainly answers that.

In other news, I think I'll schedule an eye exam in the near future....
