I don't live in cathedral so it's not my fight, but I think it would be nice to see a two storey with the liquor store on the ground and some residential upstairs.

This would be great - but we know the loudest voices in the neighbourhood would prefer a litter-ridden, weed-covered empty lot... because heritage? or community vibe? or some other ridiculous argument.

I'll give them credit - 30years is a looooong time to be obstinate.

Meaning? It has no effect on me how one lot is developed in an area I don't like in. I won't shop at the proposed liquor store bc I don't frequent the area. The retail with rental in the Canterbury lands looks good and adds a bit of density.

It's been 30 years and no one has built any mixed use. Straight retail is better than another 30 years of empty lot.

Agreed! They finally have a proposal when no one else has proposed development for that lot.

Funny, that sounds like the mantra of the City of Regina since 1980.

Agreed. If Sobeys was into getting community buy-in (and becoming a residential landlord), a fun strategy would've been to propose exactly what they have proposed... but keep a mixed-use concept (with residential on top) in their back-pocket. Have the public consultation, hear the NIMBYs with their "we want infill, we want density, we're not fans of this development..."

...then, a couple weeks later, pull out the "new" plan & look like you're listening to the community.

(this is essentially fan fiction, I realize)

Pier1 is officially shutting down. They've filed bankruptcy and hope to sell in March.

https://globalnews.ca/news/6560574/p...cy-protection/

Will that just leave Hallmark and Reitmans in that strip mall next to East Side Marios in the east?

I just drove down that line of stores this morning. Pennington's, The Shoe Company, and Thyme Maternity are also there along with Reitmans and Hallmark. There was no sign yet of Pier 1 closing, just the usual '__% Off' signs in the windows. Right now, the only empty unit is where Bowring used to be.

That entire strip mall in the NE corner of the Walmart parking lot is completely empty, I think.

Right, it's the Paderno strip that is empty. And I think there's still a space between Marshalls and London Drugs on the other side.

Yes, you are both correct. I was at the East Power Centre yesterday and noticed that all three retail units in that building are empty and the space next to Marshalls has no signs of anything going in.

Also, I noticed that there is no longer a 'leased' sign on the former Sears Home store. I guess that deal fell through.

With our faltering economy, and the decline of business for brick and mortar stores, we will see a lot of empty retail for years to come.

I noticed that Jollibee is a big hit. I counted 10 vehicles in the drive through before noon yesterday. The line went all the way into the Petro-Canada parking lot via the paved access between the two businesses.

Also, Sky Park is scheduled to open on March 1st.

Talking about malls on the pub restaurant section, thought i would just post my opinions here.

Been in Saskatoon the past 7 weeks and there Ardeens in center mall appears to be what there new versions look like. Looks just like another clothing store for women, didn't look overly busy inside. Having said that, the mall itself was busy. I wonder if these malls having underground parkades help, because I surely found it useful and convenient when its -40 out for week.

Also there midtown mall is undergoing a huge renovation. Moved there food court into the old sears space. Not that cornwall would have done that, but just something different to spice up the mall.

Not sure if Urban Planet has an official opening date at the Cornwall, but the mall has said that the walkway they've used to connect the Delta & the casino to the mall via the main floor of the old Sears will close to the public starting Feb 21st. I'd assume this means Urban Planet will be opening around then + the main floor will continue its renos.

I think that is a good bet. I walked by there yesterday and the door was open. Looked like staff were stocking clothing, all the racks and shelves looked quite full.

Yes, Urban Planet opens Friday morning. Workers were finishing the floor tile at the entrance by the food court this morning. It is very bright and very white, like H&M. It really looks great when you come off the escalator.

Step right up and get your new torn jeans!
