Were I not working in the afternoon I would have gone. As it was I drove across Broadway 6 times! The Downtown Watch were doing a great job there.

The family and I walked there (well the kiddies rode in the wagon). It was nice to walk all aorund and enjoy the activities, shop a bit and see some many people in the area.

Although it was an event to promote healthy living and cycling, I noticed 2 things. (1) there was just as people who walked or drove there as there were cyclists. (2) is it only in winnipeg were a healthy living event has 2 mini-donut concessions?

City's first Apple store opening Saturday

WINNIPEG'S first Apple Store is set to open in Polo Park on Saturday.

The prestigious computer and electronics retailer is opening a 6,000-square-foot store across from Sears in the south end of the mall on the ground floor.

Apple announced the 9:30 a.m. store opening in a mass emailing late Tuesday.

"We are very excited that they have joined our mall," said Polo Park general manager Deborah Green. "Apple is a very astute retailer and are very particular about where they locate."

The much-anticipated Winnipeg store will be the 12th Apple store in Canada with three more openings in the works across the country.

The stores are known for their detailed design featuring plenty of stainless steel, Italian tiles and blond wood finishing.

The Polo Park location will be providing free family music and movie classes, one-on-one computer instruction and a variety of other workshops, Apple says.

The company will be handing out free Apple T-shirts to the first 1,000 customers.

Apple has five stores in the Toronto area, two in the Montreal area and one each in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Vancouver.

I've been to all 5 apple stores in the Toronto area a few months ago and didn't buy a single thing. I just played around for hours messing with the macs.

I take it you've never been to an Apple Store. It isn't a store where you walk in, buy, and walk out.

It is a very fun store .... I have been to couple different apple stores and have been impressed. Winnipeg really has never experienced a store like it before. Its another example of Winnipeg reaching a new level of retail.

It will be a definate destination store ... I think Polo Park will benefit from having this store.

I've been to an Apple Store in Calgary in the Market Mall, and the one in West Edmonton Mall.

Walked in. Played around with the gadgets there, and walked out with nothing after.

Did you sit in on one of there free seminars on learning about a product??

I can't think of another store which actually educates there customers to this level about there products at the retail level.

The stores are designed to build a buzz for Apple products ... and even if you don't buy anything you should leave knowing more about what there products can do for you.

Anyways .. I expect there will be alot of activity at the new store on Saturday.

Can you buy things from them? Or are they little more than technological burlesque houses?

I have been in a couple of Apple stores. For the most part, my experience with the store has been very similar to The Jabroni's. In and out without any purchase. In fact, we used the free internet in the Apple Store at Mall of America to book our hotel on Hotwire. (We got a 4.5 star hotel for 60 dollars. w00t!)

Anyways, about the Apple Store. I would say that buying a computer or any high-capacity iPod is not a mere impulse buy for most people so that probably explains why most people never end up buying anything. However, the store definitely does a great job of generating a buzz about the brand (as can be proven by the mere fact we are discussing this).
